Soldered I think. Still a pretty good deal though, all the extras you get.

Its definitely soldered on the motherboard... but this seems like a really good price. 1080p 3d screen, blue ray, nice case, 3d glasses - not bad at all !

They don't want you to be able to upgrade so that you'll buy their new Envy next year ;)

Doesn't matter, it appears to be gone. I tried twice to buy one and the best I could do with that coupon code was get $50 off the $1,275 price, and it had a std one year wtty. Grateful if someone could tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Seems like they ran out of the 3610QM, lowest is the 3720QM now, which is probably why the price went up. I still see a 2 years limited warranty in the system customizer though.

Look at all the laptops with upgradeable GPU's. They're all much thicker and less portable than laptops with soldered in GPU's.

I'm sure it's cheaper as well.

I'm talking about manufacturing cost, I never mentioned repair costs.

how is it still cheaper to manufacture? i can't see its being a great deal cheaper or really worth it.

can they salvage soldered on GPUs by taking them off and reinstalling them? assuming MOBO is bad...and vice versa

Even if its a few dollars cheaper that is all that matters over 100s of thousands of machines it ads up to alot of money.

Also when they build these products they build them on the idea nothing will go bad over the course of the warranty or if something does go bad its replaceable like a hard drive/RAM etc.

It is no different then most companies building laptops without upgradable GPUs which is probably 98% of all laptops sold today.

Heck Apple solders the CPU on the motherboard so even that is not upgradeable along with the GPU.

The Envy is a very nice computer for the money and more so for that price. My friend has one and loves the thing. I have spent my share of time with it and came away fairly impressed if you dont need a super GPU . It can game very well.

Yeah if you turn down a few settings the game runs fine and still looks great.

I believe there should be some youtube videos of someone playing on the Envy 17 with the 7850m.

I know there are a ton of other gameplay videos on youtube from a member here named AdamDoom at least i think that is his name all done on the Envy and he mentions the settings he runs etc.

Unfortunately HP has increased it's price to over $1200 (but with quite better processor)

I need it with i7-3610QM, but it's only available with 3720QM.

It's a strategy by HP I believe, because if they will sale this with $1049 price tag, same non-3D will cost more than 3D one.

the standard up charge for the 3720 is 150 bucks so thats a far price. they didn't increase the price they just ran out of the slower processor.

They have 3610QM in stock. You can see DV6, DV7, Envy 15/17 etc. All are available with 3610QM. They just removed 3610QM from 3D version for justifying their price.

If they will give 3610QM with 3D version, it's price will be $1049 (after discount). While if you will configure non-3D 17-Inches with 3610QM, it prices will be $1149. :) So, it's all marketing strategy :)
