Holy crap! That's an amazing deal. I have one question: What exactly is a fingerprint reader? I mean... do you log in with your fingerprints or what?
How can't you like HP by the way? :D

A fingerprint reader is a small device integrated into the palmrest of a notebook (usually toward the lower right corner). It allows the user to register his/her fingerprint and use it instead of a password for logging into Windows or a variety of other tasks/functions. Use of the device is totally optional and, at any time even if you usually use the fingerprint reader, you can still type in a password rather than scan your finger.

I had a horrible experience with an HP dv9000t that I purchased in May 2006. It had to be sent in for multiple warranty repairs and a few of the problems weren't ever resolved. Then the warranty expired, with several nagging problems remaining, and within two months the motherboard is fried! That was enough to sour my opinion of HP, but in the following months I met dozens of folks (on NBR and other sites) with stories almost identical to mine. HP seems to have learned from some of their mistakes, based on what I've read in various HP forums. But they're off my list permanently!

Hmm, that is a pretty good deal, though I think I'd prefer the 4650 on the one for 799 on newegg. Of course... the res isn't as high and it's AMD... yeah this is a very good deal.

I've heard horror stories about HP, but I must say that the dv6500z that I spec'd out for a friend is working great for him and stays cool. The only problem he had was dropping it when coming downstairs and the monitor going poof... we replaced that and it's fine.

But it is meant to be a media machine not a hard core gaming computer.

Exactly. People are acting like this is supposed to a gaming machine when it isn't. It is supposed to be a media machine with mid-range gaming capabilities, which it is and for a great price.

Woah. This is a great deal. The "good" thing IMHO is that there is also an option to change the GPU to the 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 130M for an extra $100. :)

Yes, the coupon code still works.

From the base configuration, you need to add on $50 more of selection to ensure that the price before both the $250 instant discount & $250 coupon code is at least $1199.99 in order for the $250 coupon code to work.

    Good luck. :)

Yep, if I'm in the market for a notebook right now, I'll stupidly pay that extra $100 for that GPU selection (be it factory OC or not). I guess that's why I'm NBR's stupidest member ever. LOL! :D

How good is 9600M GT for things like Photoshop and some light video editing? (I know it's not a gamers card being DDR2, I would mainly use it for photo editing, also planning to keep the laptop for at least 3 years).

    Thanks.

You're more than fine doing those things you've described with the Nvidia 9600M GT GPU. IMHO, it is a very decent GPU. :)

    Thanks for answering my question.

I also assume it's powerful enough to drive the 1920x1080 HD display. Am I correct in that? Or is it better to pair it with the standard 1366x768 display? Also, I'm planning to use an external monitor in the 1600x1200 resolution. Anybody knows how it would perform?

    Thanks.

Thanks! Worked flawlessly. I added the backlit keyboard to the deal. I almost thought about going with the bluray player, but I've bought maybe 2 DVDs in my life, what's the chances of me buying a BR movie...lol (Besides, my PS3 can do that.) :)

Looks like it's only taking off $200 now. I've got a $250 coupon applied at the shopping cart screen, but when checking out it changed to $200 off after about 4 screens, and now it looks like that on the Shopping cart screen as well.

It is still working for me up to the credit card information screen. I bought one last night with paypal and got the full $250 off.

Hp has a coupon they sent out today for $200 off to anyone with a student account. Maybe try logging out if you are signed in with a student account.

Also bing.com sent me a confirmation email of my purchase for an additional 5% back.

The coupon did start working for me again after a few minutes. However, once I put my CC info, I got a declined credit card charge. Called Citi and they just decided to hold the $850 charge just for kicks, with no reason whatsoever. Once they removed the hold, I called HP customer service to finish the order and spent an hour with CSR reps from India, who were trying to take away the coupon discount, free shipping and anything else they could think of. Pretty horrible experience all-in-all. After repeatedly threatening them to cancel the order, they finally gave me the price I originally got online ($699 HDX16t configured at $1199 and $60 for 6000 wireless printer). Got the confirmation email and the config appears to be as I selected. I just hope I don't have to deal with their customer service much in the future. I guess I still have to get my Win7 upgrade, though :( .

I guess since I finished the order over the phone, I'm not getting Bing cashback, but I wasn't holding out much hope for it anyway, judging from other people's experiences.

I'm hoping the MS upgrade will be like a rebate type thing through MS. I thought I read somewhere that you wouldn't have to deal with the hardware manufacturer's to redeem the upgrade. Seems like way back in '01 that's is how it worked with my xp upgrade from me.

I've owned two HP's in the past. The last one continually had motherboard issues the entire year it was under warranty, I took it in the certified HP repair centers twice and back to HP once to get it fixed. It died a month or two outside of the warranty period, it was a compaq nx6110. It was always a hassle getting any service from them. Anyway hopefully we don't need them. :D

Mine has an expected build/ship date of October 7th. :sigh:

Sorry for the late reply, but I decided against it. I have very little need for so much power in a laptop (all I use my current laptop for is remote desktop duties and the occasional hulu vid.)

Also, I really disliked the "blinginess" of it. I went to staples to take a look at it in person and thought to myself -- that laptop is too damned shiny lol. :)
