Deal Here
I have been wanting one of these for a long time but could not justify the cost of them ($500 bottom dollar) I figured I would just one day buy the Windows Home Server Software (About $180) and build my own computer for it.
But I just found this in my e-mail today and now I am quite tempted. I really dread the fact that one day one of my hard drives is going to fail on my desktop and my data is going to be gone.
the HP Server is supposed to be the best one, its super small, looks nice, and does everything I want it to do & more.
My guess is due to the release of the new 485 & 487 models the old ones have gone down.
I read up on the new model and it sounds great but not $200 more great![]()
So while I have not decided if I want to get this yet or not I want to share it with everybody else as I think its an outstanding deal.

sounds like a great price. i personally have reconfigured dualcore atom based systems for home-servers, but the full price including licence is about the same as your option there.
go get it. i'd LOVE to have one with the hp chassis, it's beatiful.
it's the best thing i've bought, that homeserver. can't live without it anymore -

I have bought from ecost 2x with no problems, so no worries there just I am on a budget right now, and I would have to buy 2x 1TB HDD to go with this to backup my stuff as I have 1.2TB currently on my desktop. I also think I want a redundancy on the server too not sure how you can set that up, so that if a drive on the server fails it can recover itself without getting the data from the networked computers. -

how many cheap ones can you get? thinking of getting one myself, but here in switzerland, no chance.. bad hp, bad hp, thinks of switzerland as 3rd world in terms of product line. first: america, then: europe, then ( maybe): switzerland and the rest of the world.

I bounced my options back and forth.
I can build my own computer with better specs, like my HTPC has the AMD 4850e, 2gb ram, 1TB HDD, and it cost me like $350 to build. So I would be looking at maybe $450 to build my own server with similar parts. Thing is that HTPC case can not hold so many hard drives, nor are they hot swapable. I just cant find a case even close for a reasonable price so the case alone is a big selling point for this product. Seems like you said something along the same lines.
I also looked at the new model the 485, it has a faster cpu, native support for x64 install, more ram, 750gb HDD, and the new softare. Its $599 but with $75 rebate, and there is a $30 off cupon so about $500 for the new model to get better hardware & software.
If it just came out and I can get it for nearly $500 I wonder if I can find it cheaper by waiting. Also I would like to see how much of the new software trickles down to the old model via updates or into the OEM Microsoft build.
