Encryption option

The Hitachi Travelstar 7K500 Mobile Hard Drive features optional Bulk Data Encryption (BDE) for hard-drive-level data security. Hitachi is working with the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) to ensure that our new products are complaint with the forthcoming Storage Security specification that is expected to become an industry standard. With BDE, the data is scrambled using a key as it is written to the disk then descrambled with the key as it is retrieved, giving users the highest level of data protection available. In addition, it speeds and simplifies the drive re-deployment process. By deleting the encryption key, the data is rendered unreadable, therefore doing away with the need for time-consuming data-overwrite.

Thanks I needed this, and I just got back from picking it up at my Fry's!
I bought the 7k500 drive three months ago when they had the same deal, but then heard about the Hitachi Z7k320 and took it back to get it instead hoping for it to be a quieter, faster drive. After seeing there was no real performance boost in the reviews of the Z7k320, I thought screw it and never ended up with anything until today.

 

Excellent price for an excellent drive. I have been enjoying my 7K500 since I bought it a few months ago. It's a lot quieter than the WD Scorpio Black 500GB.

 

Thanks for posting this special, good price. I don't mean to be a rear end, but the shipping cost varies somewhat depending on shipping location. For my location, 97224, the Super Saver shipping is slightly higher at $5.99 and UPS ground is $7.99. Of course, this slightly higher shipped price for the 7K500 is still a very good deal.

 

Very nice to hear that it's so quiet. It is definitely something that I am looking forward to.
