Can I replace my Asus A53z's optical drive with one of these things? Or better yet, replace the HDD and just live with 90 gigs + external storage until I can get a second SSD for the optical drive?

i don't know anything about the A53z so without looking it up i'll say that if it's anything like my sager, yes. your OD bay might be constrained by its interface (e.g. my OD bay only supports up to sata II), but i would emphatically recommend you go the 'better yet' route and use an SSD as your primary drive. 90gb is more than enough. my win7 ultimate installation with all drivers and necessary software comes out to ~55gb. my intel 120gb + external storage is plenty of space and some, and the performance increase i enjoy booting from SSD is unreal.
