Can’t Buy Me Love: Microsoft Closes The Register On Bing Cashback
Microsoft has shut down Bing Cashback, according to a blog post. Bing Cashback, which is a program that allows users to save money when they purchase items found using Bing search, will be shut down on July 30, 2010.
The blog post says that Cashback is being shut down due to lack of adoption. Cashback offers will still be available until the end of July and users will have a year to redeem any money theyve earned through the program.
Microsoft launched Cashback on its old search engine, Live Search, in May 2008, when we called it a desperate and brilliant move to trade search revenue for market share. Cashback failed to do much to improve Live Searchs market share, but it did result in a significant increase in advertising revenue.
With the launch of Bing, Microsoft thought that cashback would gain more traction as a rebranded product, even launching a TV commercial and special promotions. But clearly this was not enough to drive traffic to the program.

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Will miss it. Bought my EEE 901, and got my 160GB Intel G2 ssd for under $400 with it. Got a total of $190.52 cashback.
-
Worst news ever
-
Lack of adoption isn't surprising at all, considering the pretty confusing/asinine rule of "you have to live in the states - but not really, you just need a US based account?". If it were more streamlined and open to everyone I bet it'd be big.

So, that means until July 30th I can still use Bing, and even if the cashback is pending after the cutoff date I'll still get it, right? I'd better.
The only bright spot I see in the official message is " ...and we are currently working on an exciting new program which you will hear more about from us later this summer."
Let it be true! -
I got an email from MS today, pasted below, I only used it once but got a great deal on an HP laptop. Frankly I can't believe it lasted this long, Microsoft was eating the cost of this to improve traffic on Bing and I don't think it really lead to people switching search engines.
-
yeah I had no desire to use Bing and was somewhat annoyed that I needed a laundry list of links to click to get and and sites to read to male sure I was qualified for CB. of course even if it were as easy as "one click" shopping I still wouldn't have been interested in Bing as a search engine.

The fact that they state:
"we are currently working on an exciting new program which you will hear more about from us later this summer. "
maybe they'll concentrate entirely on tech stuff if that gave them the best exposure. -
FWIW, BC was just a reason for people to use Bing over Google. The program cost them less than if they had paid over $42 billion for the Yahoo name and search engine. And some of the numbers I saw wrt Bing, Microsoft has gotten the brand awareness out with the public.
Let's see what MS will do next. -

I'm just about to go out on a buying spree. I have about twenty-eight Bings left with eBay which I was husbanding for a big project, but I guess that idea is right out.
What to buy, what to buy. -
My total cashback from bing was over $600. It was good while it lasted
-
I had a good run too while it lasted. Saved $557.20 so I can't complain much
-
I've used Bing about 10 times. But apparently I've only earned $79.99. We got some big spenders on these boards. -
Yeah, who knows what will happen going forward after it leaves..
My CB amount in purchases has givin me a little bit of nice savings..: )

I was forced to use BCB for one final big purchase this morning. There was a power outage last night and I woke up to a fried mobo in my desktop, in spite of the heavy duty surge protector that it is plugged in to, and had to order another one.

I got a e-mail saying it was ended but it looked a lot like a spam/phishing scam mail. Maybe it was not but just be careful.
This is also a good time to explore other cash back programs if you have not already. There is greenbackstreet and ebates. -
Is this what you received?
-
im stil waiting on my cash back from when i bought my asus almost 3 months ago, says it will be sent in 17 days...pretty annoying if you ask me...
