One with a 12.1" WXGA (1280x800) display, not a cramped 1024x600 netbook screen!!!

I KNOW! The 1GB is "onboard" (integrated) and there's no upgrade path! The new Mini 10, which uses the same chipset/Atom Z-series is also limited to 1GB.

Originally, the Mini 12 was only available with Ubuntu or Windows Vista Home Basic. I've read that some folks who got one with Vista had some success with ReadyBoost...too bad XP doesn't have ReadyBoost....

The chipet has been updated to accept more RAM so the Mini 10 will have more RAM options. It uses a daughterboard even though it is still soldered.

Bear with me....A daughterboard is an extension/add-on to a motherboard, right? What is the relation of the daughterboard and having expanded RAM options? And when you mention 'soldered', are you referring to the standard 1GB in the Mini 10 being "onboard" (integrated) as it is in the Mini 12?

Sorry for all the questions...I'm really trying to learn, not be argumentative! :D

The Mini 10 has the CPU and RAM module on a separate daughterboard that is connected to the motherboard. So it is 'upgradeable' in a sense because you can swap out that daughterboard with the coming 2GB version. Whereas the Mini 12 is soldered into the motherboard. Still crappy it is soldered, but all hope is not lost.

I remember seeing a spec sheet on the Mini 10 when it was first announced and it showed that it could have up to 2GB. It didn't make sense to me that it could but the Mini 12 couldn't because they use the same chipset. But now I understand...

Of course, Microsoft won't let XP Home be installed on anything with more than 1GB of RAM. So 2GB would be Ubuntu and/or Vista....or Windows 7, eventually.

lol i just set up a barebones clevo 12.1" with x3100 and a t8100, 4gb ram , and a 250gb hdd for just over 400$ ... this at least imo is not that great of a deal. these smaller notebook are dropping in price quickly and imo the atom cpu is aweful for any real world use

The light weight and thin design are the attraction (if you value those attributes over performance).

For $399, Dell has the Inspiron 13 with a 2.13Ghz Intel Celeron 560, 13.3" WXGA (1280x800) display, Intel GMA X3100, DVD-RW and 160GB hard drive. For $449, you can make it a 2.0GHz Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4200! Either setup will outperform any netbook easily!

It weighs just over 5lbs and it's 1.5" thick, but it'd be my pick if I needed a small laptop.

My Xp has one gig or ram and use got a cheap 4GB usb drive and it works wonders. No more paging and I can run dozens of apps at once (I was trying to max it once).

An 8.9" Dell Mini 9 with Ubuntu starts at $249, it's the only one I can think of- LINK

For $269, here's an ASUS Eee PC 1000HD on clearance (down from $399). It has 10" 1024x600 display, XP Home, 1GB RAM and 120GB hard drive. It has a 900MHz Celeron processor instead of the newer Atom. The main difference is that the Atom is more energy efficient. I've read several reviews that say the 900MHz Celeron and 1.6GHz Atom are very similar in overall performance other than battery life. LINK
