Thanks for the info Nigel. 8GB was around $899 when I first bought my P-7805U and at that price no one was willing to see if the P-7805U could take 8GB. Gateway specs said 4GB was max. Now the memory is more affordable. And these days we know that it will take 8.

Yeah, I was wondering about that too. I haven't figured out as to why. May be a limitation on the p8400 processor. Anyone confirm this?

The P8400 only supports 1066MHz RAM if I remember correctly. 7-7-7-24 for 1066MHz RAM sounds about right. If the RAM is rated for 1333MHz and is used on that system it will downclock to 1066MHz.

The CPU and PM/GM45 are only 1066MHz which is fine by me. 7-7-7-24 is only one of the possible timings, this count's on the memory and SPD and can vary within spec alowed timings. This is why I ask as to what the SPD of this memory is setting it at.........

    MF -

Do you know what the difference(s) is (are) between the 7801 and the 7805?

I believe the only known difference is the monitor specifications.

Therefore, the answer to your question would be "yes", would it not?

IMHO, No! People who really need 8 Gig know who you are.

My neighbor, who is now an unemployed P.S. artist, has 16 gigs in his desktop.

I would suggest you put the money in an SSD..unless you are you are one of those who really really need more than 4 Gig.

I found a use for lots of RAM. There is this free program called Dataram that will make a "RAM Drive". Putting your browser's cache on it speeds up the internet, and I thought of using it to temporarily put my recorded videos on it because I notice the slowdown when Windows Media Center is constantly writing a recording video to the hard drive.

A good SSD should be even better. The fact it should be able to store more than 4GB and is non volitile. A ram drive can make for a great work drive so long as you can live with the size limitations.

Personally I have not yet been able to fully use even the 4GB............

Yeah I just realized that an SSD is way cheaper than RAM too.

So I put a game (Warcraft III) on the RAM drive that I created and loading was only maybe 2x faster than normal and the hard drive light indicated that the hard drive was being accessed a lot while the loading was happening. Do you know what the reason for that is?

Buying individual 4GB sticks is actually cheaper right now.
