Hi, i'm considering purchasing this 37" monitor by westinghouse.
This seems like a great deal: http://www.buy.com/prod/westinghous...0-16-9-1000-1-silver/q/loc/111/205467075.html
1080p 37" for around 600$ w/ tax (yay free shipping).
Is this a good deal, or will I be able to see better deals on black friday or cyber monday? I don't frequently shop for tv's, so i'm not sure how much of a deal this is.
Also, that monitor doesn't have it's own tuner, thus no coax connection. What am i losing out of this? I'm not sure about other cable tv. I have only had tv from an antenna and now i'm using satellite from directv. If i don't have directv satellite anymore (which connects to the tv by connection to the satellite w/ coax cable, then coax to box, then box composite video to tv) will i lose without a tv tuner? I'm not sure what other connections there are... i thought that coax was only used by antenna but we are getting rid of those by feb 2009, so will i be able to connect the dtv boxes to my tv?

Maybe just getting a TV tuner for your computer would be a good idea, it would solve all those problems I think.

Change wait till Black Friday
And if you want a 1080p tv get it from Samsung, LG, or perhaps Vizio if you want a really low price. Although I've heard they're going to be expanding their price range.
Don't go for sony since they're overpriced.
As for Westinghouse I really don't know a lot about them. I haven't heard any good things though.
I just started working at BB and I'm pretty sure that they've got a lot of good deals that will be coming up. And BB is usual a little bit more expensive than the competition.
Also CC is kinda going thru a rough time. I'd go into one of their stores and check out their prices. You might be able to get an excellent HDTV from them at a very good price.
And don't forget to keep in mind how far you'll be sitting from the TV and what you'll be using it for. I know you said you want a 37' but you might want to consider 40' (especially if you get a good price). That's a nice all around size for gaming, movies, and comfortable viewing of High Def television programs as well as movies. -
Westinghouse tv's are crap. They have power supply issues which cause them to die around 12-14 months after purchase. Look it up if you dont believe me.

I don't think you need a tuner unless you are getting HD over the air or directly thru coaxial from the wall. Most people have a set-top box which should negate the need for a tuner. Westinghouse is a budget brand, 600 for a 37 is pretty good, but black friday prices are usually pretty low (although you'll have to stake out the stores to get an item in stock, more work, more benefit i guess). Like others said, if you're anal about tvs stick with sharp, samsung, vizio or sony but sonys are indeed overpriced.

Hm, I do indeed plan to go shopping and possibly camp out on thursday in BB the day before black friday. I've waited for the iPhone 3g and nintendo wii on their initial release, so this is just another wait for me.
Curious, how much are prices on black friday for a 32" or 37" 1080p hdtv? And how long before should I wait at best buy?
The westinghouse is a pretty good price and the reviews on it are satisfactory, but the customer service of westinghouse, from what i've read, is a nightmare... That's what is holding me back. If i buy the tv, and something goes wrong, how am i suppose to get this 50 lb tv fixed. If I buy at Best Buy, at least i can drive there.
And does best buy sell hd-ready monitors or tv's?
Are there any tv's that aren't necessarily high def but has that 1900x1200 or 1900x1080 that can be used as a monitor for comp/tv? I don't need high def, my old CRT tube television is already good enough for me. Quality of picture isn't too important to me. Just wondering if there is so i could just buy something cheaper. -

All LCD TVs are capable of high def and standard def. In other words you can feed standard def to a high def tv, it'll just take the standard def pic and either put bars to the left and right (to make it 4:3) or it will stretch it out to fit the screen. Personally standard def on a high def tv looks like poo, but some people don't mind.
Its hard to judge what prices will be this year on black friday, since prices overall on LCD tvs are down since last year. I remember last year the best deal was 500 for a 32 inch tv. Some of the best deals I saw last year (and one i jumped on) were the sharp tvs. Snagged a 42 inch 1080p for $1080. 46 inchers were going for 1200??? on black friday.
Are you buying this primarily for your computer or for a combo of computer and tv?
Check out these forums, they are pretty good, comparable to NBR but for TVs.

I plan to buy this as a combo of computer/tv. I have a current old crt tv and a 19" non widescreen monitor. Both are already dying and pretty bad. I'm probably going to use it more as a monitor for my computer as i use my computer nearly all day every day, while the tv is on half the time or less.
I know high def is capable of standard def, was wondering if there was just standard def LCD's with a nice resolution. I guess all LCD's are high def then? -

I have one and love it, I know about 20 other people that hopped on the westy wagon about 2 years ago when the original LVM37W3 was for sale at $1000 shipped and not a single one of us have had problems or regretted it.
Since it has no tuner that cuts about $200 off the price so its equal to a $800 TV in quality, since its a lower known name brand they dont inflate there prices so if it was a sony it would be a $1200 or so TV.
Its a good deal, nothing even on black friday will be that cheap I bet, especially with all the inputs & options. (plus online no tax, & no shipping... thas awesome)
