Just found it by accident...
Sony VAIO Y series laptops, $100 off ($665 before tax)
![]()
Available through Sony Higher Education store:
https://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wc...0151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644693500
To get to the actual discount, go first to the Higher Ed store, click on Laptops and watch below the list for small flash add that pops -- once it shows $100 off click it and it will automatically apply it to the already discounted price.
Original price: $800
Price with educational discount and $100 off = $665 before tax ($135 off total) for the config below:
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo SU7300 (1.30GHz)
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Features: 13.3" LED backlit LCD, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, HDMI™ out, Bluetooth®
Mass: 3.9 lbs / 1.77 kg
It has Intel GMA HD graphic card (no good for gaming), battery life is sucky compared to Asus (you can google for some reviews to get the idea) but the build and the screen are pretty solid on Sony's. Also, I think there's still free ground shipping on pretty much any comp they sell.
Expires March 6th.

LOL
I guess their last sale from the other week was so successful they decided to do it again. -
I had a look at the same one in a store and ergonomics are really nice. Keyboard a lot better than the Asus ul series. drawbacks are for sure the graphic card and ya, does this have any backlit keyboard?
-
Hmm I think it doesn't, it hasn't been advertised. And the reviews certainly don't mention it. Shame.
BTW, had no idea it was already discounted before. -
ah with backlit keyboard like the S series in europe has it .. id pull the trigger i guess, 6 h battery is still good and the build quality is nice also ... just wait till 6 march I guess
then I know what asus shows at the cebit here and if apple brings a nice new macbook pro

Honestly a backlit keyboard defeats the purpose of prolonging battery life and being a budget ULV notebook.
-
Sorry if this is a dumb question but how do you get the student discount applied and how do they verify you're a student?

During checkout they will ask you what school you go to from a select list of universities. -
It's not a dumb question. Sometimes they will not verify at all. When I was buying the desktop from Dell (2.5 years ago) I did have to leave the Student ID number though.... and since I gave the wrong one they called my school to check
(but they usually don't.... or don't anymore)
Most companies will have student discounts, some less some more. I usually google it, like if I were to look for Lenovo discounts, I would google "Lenovo Higher Education" or "Lenovo Higher Education Store" and work from there.
About the backlit keyboard, yes it does waste the battery life but it would be nice to have it; you just don't have to use it if you want to max out battery. Apart from the fact that it usually look sooo sexy on most laptops. -
Wow, student discount? Looks like Sony does reach out to poor students! Going to law school in fall.
-
Damn! I won't be buying until May! I want my 3-year warranty to last until the end of my finals May 2013. If I buy, I risk being warrantless after March 2013!!!!
-
by then there will be CULV laptops with the ULV Core i5 and Core i7
so just wait.... -
For $800 or less with a weight of 4.5 pounds or less with a build construction to the Sony Y? I don't really want or need the i5/i7. Truth is, I already have an ok gamer laptop which I plan to replace with a full-powered desktop.
My priorities are weight and build construction. The Vaio Y fulfills those requirements very well. The thinness is sexy. -
Sony VAIO Y series laptop, $100 off (total $664)
