Is this a good computer? Its looks like a good deal. I'm looking for something for my father. He just needs for web surfing. Nothing fancy. Thanks for any comments on this.

I'm not sure about the notebook itself, but the you can get a notebook with better specs for $700.

Do you have any recommendations? I went to a couple of stores and everything in this price range seemed to have slower processors (~2.0GHz.) I thought this computer was attractive since it had a 2 year warranty and was tax free and had free shipping. If you have other recommendations I would surely consider them. Thanks.

This is a bit pricey. I picked up a similar HP dv4, with similar specs but a better hard drive for $585 a few months ago.

Me personally, I'd pick up a refurbished Dell Latitude E6400 from the Dell Outlet. You can get a really good deal if you buy a refurbished one and since they come with standard 3 year warranty just like the new ones, it's hard to beat. But I realize a lot people don't want to buy a refurbished, so like MrPresident said there are usually pretty good deals on HP DV4's. Lenovo's Thinkpad SL400 and IdeaPad Y430 might also fit the bill. But without knowing what you're looking for (size, weight, style, etc.) it's hard to say for sure. You might post the FAQ in the What Notebook Should I Buy? forum and see if you can get some good suggestions.

I checked HP site and when I built a computer with exact same specs as the Toshiba, the price was about $1000. When I searched for DV4 model, I see there are cheaper versions in your price range, however, they have slower CPUs (2.0Ghz) with slower bus speed. When I add an extended warranty to bring it to 2 years total, the price is just about $699.

Thanks for your comment. I'm an Apple guy so all these PC variations are kind of confusing. I checked Dell for the several different models and they all come in over $1000 similarly equipped to the Toshiba. I didn't consider a refurb since its a gift for my dad.

Did you use a coupon on that DV4? HP's (most PC'c for that matter) are over priced unless your using a coupon. HP will run coupons up to 30% off quite regularly. Dell and Lenovo likewise. Just search Google for notebook coupon or deals or click on the coupons link at the top of the page. Always check for coupons when buying a laptop or you're likely to get ripped off.

Yes, Chris is right. They had a pretty sweet deal on a Lenovo on this page but it expired that would have been the one to pick up.

I did some looking around for 14 inch notebook deals today and unfortunately it looks like many of then just expired yesterday. Like this on I found on xpBargains.com

Lenovo has 20% off Ideapad Y430 laptops and Ideapad Y530 laptops w/ coupon code: USPIDEAPROMO (exp 3/24).

    Ideapad Y430 14.1in laptop (278187U) w/ Core 2 Duo T6400 2GHz, 14.1 " WXGA TFT with integrated webcam, 4GB PC3-8500 DDR3, 320GB, DVD+-RW, 802.11b/g wireless, Bluetooth, Vista Home Premium, 1yr warranty for only $669 - 20% coupon code = $535 w/ free shipping.

Choose the 278187U config at $669 (right most), add to cart and apply coupon code.

It's CPU is a littler slower and the warranty is only one year. The warranty could be upgrade though for $150 - 20% = $120 so the total for it with three year warranty would be $655. This isn't really all that great of deal, but it shows you that there other good deals out there if you can find them.

The Toshiba Satellite Pro is a good system for small & medium business use, especially with the 2-year warranty. It also has some durability-enhancing features (spill resistant keyboard, etc). But there are better choices for individual/home use.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y430 (14.1") and Y530 (15.4") are very good choices. They're well-built and deliver a lot of features and performance for their relatively low prices (especially with current coupon deals).

The Y530-405167U is a steal at $669 minus 15% (eCoupon- USPLVOMADNESS), which brings the price down to $568.65! That includes a Vista Home Premium, 2.0GHz Intel T6400 processor, 15.4" WXGA (1280x800) LED display, 3GB DDR3-1066 RAM, 250GB hard drive, Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics, Intel 5100AGN wireless and a great sound system (4-Dolby Home Theatre speakers + subwoofer). LINK

The Y530-405166U ($799 minus 15% = $653.65) is an even better deal! It adds/upgrades to the model above: Vista Home Premium 64-bit, 4GB DDR3-1066 RAM, 320GB hard drive, 256mb nVIDIA 9300M GS dedicated graphics and Bluetooth! LINK[/URL
