Not sure if this has ever been posted but newegg has Vista Ultimate OEM for 199 and all the other versions are cheaper.

that doesn't look like the regular version.
-
I think it can only be installed on one PC.
Hence the phrase "System Builders".
Great for people who are Upgrading RAM on notebooks, or better yet RAM and Graphics on desktops.
It is the regular Vista Ultimate. -
that's what I ment by regular, as in the normal version can be installed more than once. but don't hesitate to correct me, I'm trying to find out the truth.
-
Oh,
Yea I think thats all there is to it.
It funny how you can get two of these for less than the regular version. -
Im not sure what you mean. I bought it its just an OEM copy they same as the retail package without the fancy box. and your not supposed to use any version on more than one pc.
-
but what if you buy a new HD and want to put it on it, will it still work.
-
I think it's the PC hardware like the Motherboard.
I'm not sure about other hardware. Wonders about RAM?
I doubt the HD will change anything. -
You can install it in any new pc you have. all you do is call microsoft to get a new key if its needed. you own a lisence by buying it. You can install it many many times. all those rumors about it are pretty much false. you cant have it running on two pcs as once without hacks. but if you upgrade your Mobo or get a new pc you can install it again just fine.

Yeah, I saw that a few weeks back.
I myself will be getting Vista Home Premium OEM for $119.99 in a while, I don't mind if I can use it only on one computer as the price is cheap and I plan on keeping my laptop for a while. -
OIC, thanks for clearing that up, two last questions; does it cost anything to get a new key? and is that "Vista Voids you XP CD once you install/update it" true, or is it just another false rumor?
-
No it doesnt cost anything. you just call up if your key doesnt work on a new install. remember you can only have the OS installed on one machine at a time. as soon as you connect to the internet the OS will know you are running it on two machines.
About the XP voiding. It has always been any OS makers policy that if you buy a upgrade the old key is invalidated. but i think it may still work. but thats only with upgrades. The OEM copy of vista is actually cheaper than the upgrade version and its a full version.
I havent tried with vista but im pretty sure you can install the upgrade version without having XP installed it just needs to read the old cd. Thats the way MS did it in the past. I heard you couldnt do it with vista but i have read later things thats its still possible to use the upgrade without XP installed. -
Thanks for clearing that up.
So, I can get the full version of Vista and still install my XP cd on another computer? -
Yes that can only be a problem if you buy a vista upgrade. The full version of vista is a lisence on its own has nothing to do with any previous OS. Remember to look for the OEM versions on newegg. Much cheaper. OEM just means its meant for system builders kinda like what HP or someone would get to sell with their PCs they dont use Retail versions. But they are identical software.

Thanks
I won't be buying Vista (64bit) for a while now. For now I'm just going to use the free 32bit version from my uni.
just found out that they offer Ultimate 32bit a few minutes ago. -
Honestly i wouldnt use 64bit for a while there is no benifit really from it yet.
-
which is why I'm not buying it. That and I don't have a 64bit processor.
