Awesome find! The only problem is that the rebate isn't valid at stores like Newegg or Amazon. Real shame...

thought about getting this, but I've read several reviews stating that it is an incredibly slow HDD. An employee at Fry's advised I should steer clear, even for using in an HTPC build, and said at best... it's only good for storage

    whaddya guys think?

^ Thats because they didnt align the drive. The EARS range uses 4k sectors (advanced format)

I dont have any problems with the WD15EARS. Its not the fastest drive in the block, but i wouldnt say slow at all.

It's no WD Caviar Black or SSD, but the WD 2TB green gets decent speeds.

I have one of these WD 2TB drives as my main storage repository for all my backups and media files. I can also attest that it isn't the speediest hard drive out there, but in my case, it really doesn't matter since I'm not using it as a performance drive.

And just for something fun to point out, it took just over 76 hours to DBAN this hard drive using the full DoD wipe method...

Ugh. I hate DBAN. DoD wiping is past paranoia. Just write zeros to the drive and be done with it.

ARGH! How do I always miss these? I want to update my 1TB to 2TB in my home server. This would have been a perfect opportunity. It says "currently unavailable" but ends "5/20/10". So maybe there will be a chance it'll come back in the next few days. Considering its Advance Format wonder if Home Server will recognize it because it's XP based? Funny because I just read about Advance Format in MaximumPC. Glad I did!

So is price out of pocket ~ $147 - $10 discount + tax shipped then 12% bing + $40 rebate?

I use WD Green and I could say that while it isn't the fastest one I have, it runs cool.

It's ok for storage drive. I wouldn't use it for OS or loading apps/games.

Those speeds are perfectly acceptable. Faster than what most laptop drives put out too (obviously these are desktop drives).

    hmmm... really considering it.
just finished putting my HTPC together and now... the Hitachi HDD noise is really sticking out. Not a problem in my other rig, since the 4870s are retardedly loud!

don't know how anyone who needs this much storage doesn't buy it without hesitation.

I may buy one and don't even need it yet. just for a hackintosh drive on my Dell desktop.

    in fact...sold.

Are these the same drives that have variable rotational speeds depending on how much activity you put on the drive? I was thinking of buying one when they were available, then I read some of the comments and thought better of it. It's primary use would have been to play games.

These are really meant as a storage drive not really for OS or games. But the size of game installs these days, you almost need a 2TB. I have a 400GB external WD drive I use just for my Steam backup and it's got about 300GB on it already.

These drives are awesome for storage and were priced great - if I needed more external space, I'd have picked up a couple without hesitation.

Althought it only allows one rebate per household... Not that it matters because they are sold out...
