Hey there,
I will need a laptop to replace my desktop computer this autumn since I will go study abroad for a year. I wanted to know what would be the best period to purchase it starting from now until probably mid/end july. Should I buy it now or will the prices get lower this summer? I am mainly interrested in the dell xps m1530. I know pretty much the specs I am looking for. If I purchased it right now it would cost me about 1100-1200$. I live in Canada so that would be in canadian dollars.

The end of July. Always wait as long as possible.

In my opinion, the best deals are usually from November to January... Why? I bought my inspiron 6000 in December 2005 with a $750 off coupon. Last November, I bought 2 inspiron 1520 with $500 off coupon plus I got 2 $200 dell gift cards... The best XPS deals have been around those months too.
If you need a laptop sooner, there are sporadic deals throughout the entire year too... -
When Intel releases Centreno 2 in like June. Either buy of the new Centreno 2 Notebooks or buy a old one when they try and discount the old ones. Always wait till you NEED to buy.

thanks everyone for the tips. I almost bought one a week ago. I really have a problem with buyer's fever so I always need to remind myself not to make rash decisions about my purchases, laptop or not. And one of the best way to do this is to get an unbiased opinion

I think we can all agree that waiting until one needs to buy is best.
It should be noted, however, that determining when exactly "need" is warranted (in the case of purchasing laptops) is not much of a simple task.
The difficulty is due to the fact that no situation strictly requires a laptop. It's a convenience. People don't "need" email or the internet. Neither do we "need" cars - actually, we don't even "need" food or water.
My point is that Need is useless without a context. If you don't have food or water for long enough, you'll die. If you don't have a car, you may not be able to go places as easily or as quickly. If you don't have a laptop, you may find yourself at public computer labs, or unable to play your favourite games while not at home. You get the picture.
Obviously, "need" for food/water is vastly different from "need" for laptops, since the first condition will kill you if you it isn't satisfied. Laptops, not so much.
So how do you determine what the "need" for a laptop means to you, then? It's important to consider what purposes you are purchasing the laptop for. Assuming that the buying value for a "new" laptop increases with time (because the technology gets better,) you want to determine at what point your access to the laptop is worth more than the benefits you'd receive from waiting. -
Do you guys think dell will have some back to school discounts? I'm glad I stumbled upon this thread so now I know that I should wait to buy a laptop

Don't about others but for me the best season to buy a notebook is just after I bought a new one .
Shortly later I always find a better model or price or both
So imho the right answer to your question will be "now" if one of the 2 conditions apply :
1. You need it so bad you can't wait any more .
2. You know something better/cheaper is coming soon but you don't care or plan to tradeup your new notebook sooner .
What would be the best imte to buy?
