people should jump on this. apparently this is not only just for a limited time...but limited quantities are available. -
Will I be able to do a clean install with the upgrade disc? Or will I have to first install vista and then do the 7 Install?
If it clean installs, I'm getting it definitely.
Edit: I just read in several places that the upgrade will clean install. Ordered from amazon. This is my first time getting an OS that didn't come with a PC. I'm very excited! October's going to be a great month for me. Windows 7, Tekken 6...

I do not think anybody can answer that question, but I would imagine you can just like you could with the vista upgrade disk.
Even if you install over vista, it will probably give you an option to put all the vista files in the "windows old" folder for a clean install rather than a "over the top" install that your thinking about. -
Yeah I found out it can by doing a google search.
I keep my OS and programs on a separate partition so I'd just have to back those up.
October will come quick. Because the summer always flies by. Almost July already. -
Can someone clear this up again plz from above comments?
So I could just pop in the upgrade disk without installing vista?
Or install vista first then install win7 using upgrade cd? -

Man just checked my bank account $100 bones to last me the next week... I want to get this deal but it would probably be very wise to not get it now. I hope its still up for sale next week when I get paid.
They do make you pay up front right? -
I'm waiting for Ultimate. Should be the best for compatibility, given the fact that it comes with a virtualized copy of XP.
EDIT: Whoops, Pro and Enterprise come with it too. My bad! -
From what I've read, just use the upgrade disc.
Amazon doesn't charge you until it ships. And if the price drops any further between now and when they charge you (even if you place the order today) you get the lower price. -
I bought from newegg:
"Can I pre-order a product that is not yet in stock?
Yes, but pre-orders are only offered for certain items. At this time, most of our products are not eligible for pre-order. Please note that we will not charge or ship a pre-order until all items on the pre-order are in stock. An item's ETA is subject to change without notice."
You can also cancel the order anytime before it ships (10/22/2009) -

Cool thanks NiteWalker, looks like that is my best avenue then. -
I guess if u include tax, this might not be a huge deal for some.

Id rather let it come to me in the mail than to be bothered to go out to a store for it. -
So many choices! I hate having to make choices! Should I buy Home or Professional? Or should I just put what I would spend on Windows 7 toward a new Windows 7 laptop? What to do, what to do. Thanks for the info though. Rep+
Honestly, is there anything an average user would miss out on if they went with Home instead of Pro? I hate to spend $50 on something I don't really need.
EDIT: I wonder if MS will offer it like they do Vista Ultimate at discount to students?
EDIT2: Just remember in order to be able to use XP mode you must have a CPU that supports virtualization, and mine doesn't. That was the only real reason I saw in getting Pro. Am I missing anything else? I guess that leaves me with the choice of Home or a new laptop. Hmm. -
Thanks! Saw some of this in the Win 7 forum..but where you can purchase is nice
Cin. -
Compare the different versions here:
http://store.microsoft.com/microsoft/Windows-Windows-7/category/102?WT.mc_id=msccomhpfeature_win7
Basically, pro will give you these 3 additional items:
1. Run many existing Windows XP productivity applications in Windows XP Mode.
2. Connect to company networks easily and more securely with Domain Join.
3. Recover your data easily with automatic backup to your home and business network. -
Thanks for the info, ordered one on the Amazon site.
-
Another advantage amazon has is release day delivery for an additional $6. I didn't go for it because free shipping has always been fast enough for me.
-
^ Even better than that, Amazon doesn't charge your card for pre-orders until the item ships. If you decide to cancel before then, you don't have to wait for a refund or some such.
sure we can. the answer to his question is no.
he'll have to install XP or Vista... THEN upgrade. the full install discs have a different (and significantly higher) pricing structure.
Everyone looking to buy this: hold on to your old XP discs. they'll provide the smoothest upgrade path, i'd presume.
Full retail disc pricing: $199, $299, $319.

I think his question though was if he could do a clean install instead of installing on top of Vista. The answer is yes. It states on the Microsoft order page, "If you have Windows Vista, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. You can do a clean install (back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications) or an in-place upgrade (Windows 7 installs over Windows Vista)." XP users MUST do a clean install.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015

Kool, you clearly answered my question. Thx!!
I guess I'm gonna just get the win7 pro upgrade version then
-
wait, what? well if that's what he meant. with this disc, you can get to Windows 7 by:
No OS -----> XP install (fresh or otherwise) ------> Win 7 Upgrade
No OS -----> Vista install (fresh or otherwise) ------> Win 7 Upgrade
you can not go:
NO OS -----> Win 7
everyone should be clear. You will have to put some other version of Windows on a PC in order for this disc to install Win 7. the full, retail copy (that will take you from no OS to Win 7) will be $199/$299/$319. -
yup, I understood as you explained. You need full retail copy to go win7 from no os.
-
excellente!
-
I'm very tempted to get this. I just spent so much on my desktop I don't really feel like dropping another $50
-
what will they be charging for this upgrade post-release? 100?

I hear you but later on if you want Win 7 you will regret it if you end up paying more.
If your totally happy with Vista though then dont sweat it. -
This almost makes me regret not buying an OS with my notebook--
Oh well...tax deduction!!! -
Thanks for the heads up. I just pre-ordered 3.
-
Yea, I might get it on Amazon or Newegg, since they only charge pre-orders when they ship. I'll have more money by then

I went for cheapo $50 premium, no XP visualization for me, at least not for now.
If I see it works well (specifically gaming) then I may later invest into getting it. -
Just jumped on this deal for win7 pro upgrade
-
Got Home Premium from Amazon.
-
in for premium from amazon. i signed up for the free prime membership trial. if i cancel this right away, will i still get the free release date shipping? any tips?
-
Might as well ride out the free trial. Amazon prime is awesome. Free 2 day shipping and $3.99 overnight shipping. Some items end up being only $1.99 for overnight shipping.

Which link? The first one I posted is the same as that one. Check out my post with noparse:

The Fire Snake Notebook Virtuoso
Guys I have a few questions...
1.) Can you use this disc to upgrade from XP pro to Win7 home edition?
2.) When is MS planning on stopping support for Vista?
3.) Is this offer for Win 7 x32 or x64? -
Hmm odd, I'm not sure why you're getting that?
1. Yes, but you will need to do a clean install rather than an "upgrade" when you get the disks.
2. Depends which version. You can check here: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/search/?sort=PN&alpha=WINDOWS+vista
3. You get both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions. -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
I figured out why crash, its a new thing NBR is doing, its going to be on any link in the forum, its a redirect service. probably gives tech target some revenue.
But its not your link, its being done at a higher level.
On Topic:
About #3, I am glad MS made the move to include 64bit and 32bit with all versions this time, I also hope that Win 7 starts coming installed on notebooks from the factory that there is an option to have both but that I have my doubts about. -
Hmm that sounds familiar.. I think Andrew said something once about that. I think you're right about the redirect for revenue bit.
Me too. It was such a pain to find different disks for Vista if you wanted to use 64-bit but your computer came with 32-bit or vice-versa. It would be nice if more manufacturers allowed you to pick when configuring a laptop instead of only being able to decide between Home Premium, Professions, etc. -
Thanks Jessica for clearing it up. Would a clean install be possible if you already have vista installed? I mean would you still have to insert the retail disc? Also, the vista disc I have is a dell, would this be sufficient?
I did preorder windows 7 already through amazon. Can't wait for it.
About the upgrade paths; I have vista home basic; I ordered windows 7 home premium. Am I going to have any issues installing?
Thanks in advance and I'm glad someone from MS is posting to help clear confusion and spread the word. -
Jessica, I have a question about upgrading from an OEM copy of Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit. I understand that I will need to do a clean install, but I was wondering what sort of check the 64-bit installer will do. Will it recognize the 32-bit installation and not ask for further verification, or will I need to insert a Vista disk during the installation?
-
Engadget is reporting that Japan has sold out of their pre-order copies, so I'd order soon to avoid waiting until after it sells out in the US.
-
1. Yes, but you will need to do a clean install rather than an "upgrade" when you get the disks.
Are you saying you have to reformat windows XP to install windows 7 upgrade? and what if you have vista ultimate
Thanks ! -
Is there a maximum number of times you can install it?
What if I want to share it with my family or plan to reformat my computer several times?
Thanks.
Windows 7 Upgrades available - starting at $50
