I'm not sure where to put this, so it might get moved.

I'm trying to get a new notebook asap. And in few weeks I'm going to be in Japan. Basically I was wondering if it would be cheaper to buy one while I'm there. So does anyone know if prices are lower in Japan?

do you actually know or are you just guessing?

a lot of people assume that electronics are cheaper in Japan, but it's not nessicarily true. If anyone actually knows from experience, I'd appreciate itl

(btw, no the keyboard would not be in kanji)

It depends on the brand. I'm also clueless, but I do know that things in general are expensive in Japan. I would do some "googling" to find out prices on laptops, then compare them with the prices in the US.

i met a french guy just yesterday and he said notebooks are cheaper in japan, cause everybody uses notebooks instead of edsktops. desktops are more expensive than in anywhere else.

he told me he bought his fujitsu p-something life series.. the ulv for 1800 worth of singapore dollars, and when we checked yesterday, it was going at 3600 singapore dollars. :O ..

not sure whether the seller was trying to pull a fast one on us.. but 1800SGD (1058 USD) is supposedly cheap.. or is it?

I was in japan this past summer for a month, and while i was there i was hoping to buy some cheap electronics but i found that it's usually the prices are either the same price or slightly higher. so it might not be worth it, hong kong has cheaper electronics there.

Be aware of the taxes when you bring electronics into the US/Canada. I met a salesman at the Houston Airport last year. He said he could buy electronics stuff from Japan in a cheaper price, but considering that he needed to add import tax on the sales price, he couldn't make any profit.

However, if for personal use, to avoid the taxes at the airport, a friend of mine bought a brand new digital camera in Hong Kong, and she just carried the camera with her when she back to Canada, and then sent the boxes and manual separately by mail.

I have a friend studying in Japan for the year, and I recently asked him this question to get his take (he's studying in Sendai, Japan).

He says that, just as odb said, electronics in Japan are generally on-the-level or slightly higher-priced when compared to United States counterparts. Take, for instance, a cell phone. Cell phones in Japan are insanely overpriced, and the plans are outrageous. My friend can barely use his and it still costs him $30 a month. Just because Japan is the point of origin for a lot of cool electronic gadgets does not mean they're cheaper over there.

Also, yes, generally Hong Kong has extremely cheap electronics. However, this is not because Hong Kong knows a marketing secret that no one else does. Hong Kong is the piracy and counterfeit capital of the world. It's easy to sell a $1500 laptop for $800 when the chewing gum holding the insides together snaps in 2 months. :p

    depends what brand and models
for an example, recent hot model sony sz:
hong kong : sz =us$1535+no tax (solo 1.83G,XP pro,60G,512M,DVDR DL)
    usa : sz140(with same config)=us $1800+tax

oversea purchase, warranty is what you may need to concern more!
