I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 8600 fully loaded for about $1,500 through my job's Employee Purchase program. Although it is not a 17" monitor, the Wide Screen graphics is awesome, and hooks up to my old 17" monitor with ease. The battery life is 4 hrs, and that from what I hear is extremely long.
The place that I used for a good honest Laptop comparison was CNet (http://reviews.cnet.com/2001-1_7-0.html?tag=cnetfd.navtab). They have plenty of information for specs, and even gives a comparison page. That would seem to be a good place to start.

I have a Dell 9300, I got really good deal on it, but I think if I had it to do over again I would go with the Fujitsu 6010. It's a little pricey compared the configuration you can get if you wait for a good Dell coupon but in the end what you end up with is a cheap Dell as compared to a solid Fujitsu. Before you buy anything, at least try to check out a Fujitsu 6010.
I know things, things that could bore people to death.
