I was gonna buy a thinkpad but then i saw this and it's so tempting. Should i still go for the built quality of a T42? I heard M3 runs hot and loud.

It depends on what you want it for. I would recommend looking at the Toshiba website and seeing how much a custom M3 is. It comes with an underclocked 6600 Go which makes it slighty faster than an X600, plus you can configure it with a higher resolution screen.

One thing about the heat and noise, I think Toshiba has corrected that on the custom M3's. If you need a good GPU and a good screen go with the custom M3 (not the pre-configured). The build quality on the M3 is pretty good too and they have been out long enough that Toshiba has had time to fix any major problems with the model. Hope this helps!

Don't you need to be a student at McGills?

    Nevertheless, that's a sweet price.

This same model on toshiba.ca costs 1000$ more. I couldn't believe the advertisement but it's true. No matter how i look at it, it seems like the value is incredible, still right now i'm very obsessed about the solidity of a thinkpad.
As for the heat and noise issue, i don't see why they would fix it in the custom units and not the preconfigured. What COULD they do about heat and noise without modifying the whole layout of a notebook?

Tomorow i'll go and touch one of these to see how they feel compared to a thinkpad. If its good, i'll have to cancel the thinkpad and save myself some 800$.

Bah... in four years when i'll be done with school i'll afford myself something better...

By the way i am not a student of McGill, i'm from U de M, but i have friends who can get it for me.
