amazon has a simpletech mini portable external hard drive 320gb at 99$. According to a review. inside it is a western digital 320gb . so you can buy it then open it and you'll have a 320gb internal notebook hard drive plus an external enclosure where you can put in your old hard drive.

Good deal, but I normally stay away from WD.

Away from WD??
Thats usually a comment I hear from products like Maxtor or something -
Actually, I second Rambo29 on that comment.
I had a bad run in with Western Digital a few years ago, and after that I never bought another drive from them.
I have stuck with Hitachi and Samsung ever since and never had problems.
I bet Rambo had a similar bad experience as did I.
I bought 16 40Gb Western digital drives and 7 of them did not work on unpackaging. Of the remaining 9 drives, 8 of them died after 2 months. They would click ridiculously, causing sproadic restarts of the spindle motor. Teh last drive still ran, but I just shipped all of them back to WD. I said screw it, WD can go kiss my ass.
Out of every computer I have found, I have never seen a Western Digital drive still work. All of them have the sproadic restart of the motor problem. As a result, if I even find a WD, I dont even bother testing it, I just smash it with a hammer.
I only buy Hitachi and Samsung from now on, and I have never had a problem.
I had a similar problem with Seagate in which almost every desktop drive I bought of theirs had a spin retry count on arrival. After 5 returns to newegg, I just told them to give me my money back. I ordered a hitachi and it has been running strong for a few years now.
I still recommend WD and Seagate if their drives are strong and have good ratings. Its just that my personal experiences steer me to the competition.

Can anyone confirm this? I was actually going to buy a 250gb WD HD for my HP Laptop.

The fact that drives you've bought years ago were malfunctioning has nothing to do with WD's current quality level.
