I have an Acer Aspire 5630, and I want to mod it with a fingerprint reader. Any idea where I can buy one for relatively cheap? I saw some IBM and HP modules on eBay but am not sure if they interface though USB or not.

Any tip on where I can cut and mount it? Is there a service manual so I can find a USB port? I'm assuming I can't connect two devices to one USB port (i.e. if I wire it to the webcam).

    Thanks.

More work than what its worth thats for sure even if you did pull it off.

If anything just get an external one that goes thru usb.

I didn't think it'd be too hard to connect it to USB. Say if I get an external one and disassemble that. Would I be able to connect two devices to one USB port though (without the use of a hub)?

You would have to solder it to the motherboard, or tap one of the other USB ports. It would cut some of the power away from the normal USB port. I'd say just get an external USB fingerprint reader. Not worth voiding your warranty, and all the trouble you will go through.

Well warranty is out, that's why I was considering it. I don't know if there is another USB port connection on the motherboard :( I guess I won't go through with the mod, too much trouble to find a fingerprint reader and interface it, let alone mount it.

Connecting two devices to one port won't work. You will have countless errors not to mention lack of power for each device. Especially for a web cam. Secondly mounting it would be very hard and you would ruin the surface of your laptop.

Sorry, guys! but it can be done. First provide a 2port usb hub, parted out casing and its bulky connector. If you are handy enough on soldering connect the first usb port of hub to fingerprint reader and the other one on your webcan. Thats how you can do it. You can even install your own gps if you wish. More info on modding go to panasonic forum and you can find a lot fo modification goin on.
