Has anyone done any insane cooling mods to their laptops? I dont mean just adding a laptop base cooler. I mean physically modding and soldering their heatsinks.
Well, Soldered on three old southbridge/northbridge heatsinks to the PCI video card you see in my sig since it ran at almost 70C idle. I also installed a fan but then didnt like the noise. It was a huge challenge because the slot int he D/Dock is half height and half length. But the mod worked well.
In addition, I pried off the plastic vents that cover the heatsink on the back of the laptop. I feel that they impeded airflow 10% or more. I did a good job, making it look stock although it was really hard to get it smooth since the case is made of magnesium alloy. I was also thinking about supplementing that heatsink with either a smaller one where the vent it (because I have about 1cm room left to mess with), Or to remove the keyboard and find a good spot to put a low profile heatsink.
Reasons for this are obvious, because I run an Intel X9000, and my Quadro FX 360m does not downclock (I researched this for months), and aways runs at full speed. In addition with the D/Dock and 3 additional monitors, the computer as a whole runs much warmer and with more workload. Take a look at my sig and let me know what you think? Thanks all.

These work great to place on the GPU heatsink, they have to be cut down abit but work well:

These work great for cooling aswell:

I also took off my mesh on the inside of my vents for extra cooling too, does a good job.. -
I don't know if those will even fit in a laptop, and don't recommend trying...
I know several people have done a "copper mod," which involves replacing the stock thermal pads on many laptops (which bridge the gap between the heat pipe and the GPU or CPU) with Arctic Silver and a thin copper shim. That can reduce temperatures some 5-10 degrees, depending.
Here's a great step-by-step walkthrough, specific to the Dell XPS M1330. Generally, though, these steps will be the same for most laptops. -

I will try it out too.

I plan to improve the cooling system even further using different heat conducting pads and maybe adding a manual fan control through a button. -
