Ok to begin, i bought a quicksnap cover when i had bought my computer, i had purchased the cherrywood. Which was very nice but got old after a while, and decided it was to "purply" So i decided to paint it, which is another thread located here:

    http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=107849

Anyway. so i decided just being blue wasnt enough so i wanted to make it black and other things :) You'll see...

To begin sanding down with low grit paper [IMG]

Now that thats done wet sanding to smooth down, and cut a hole in the center with dell badge removed. [IMG]

Next for the design and to begin cutting

Once cutting is complete , wet sanding resumes again [IMG]

And a 3 coats of autmotive top coat
    [IMG]

Take low grit sand paper to it for brushed steel effect and wahlah !

Yeah, that looks like it too some serious time and dedication. Looks great though...well worth the effort, I'm sure.

What did you use to cut the design?

For the time it takes and the materials ( if I were to buy the quicksnap, mod it then sell it ) I would have to charge over a hundred dollars..

If i WERE to do this i would require that the buyer have their own quicksnap cover, and send it in , and i would only charge 50 bucks. If anyones interested, hell let me know.

Dang man that is really well done! Great job! If only someone had a laser cutter you could do that in 5 minutes... ;)

That looks awesome. I was wondering when someone was going to mod the covers. I would love to get one of those for my I9300, but right now since I don't really take it out much I won't do it anytime soon. Once I need to take it out...the silver doesn't really cut it for me. :)

I can't believe it looks that good when it was cut with razor blades. If I tried something like that, it would look like Edward Scissorhands got ahold of it after a rough night out.

    Again, nice job.

Yeah laser cutter would be great for that sort of thing. Perhaps the next dell I buy (if I do which i very well may) I'll send it in to ya :)

    Great job!

Don't have a pic of mine but I covered the dell badge with a giant ferrari badge and also did two shields.

A quick note on laser cutting:

Not all materials are conducive to laser cutting. Some with high acrylic content cut rather nicely, while others can show significant edge melting and charring. There is also a problem with PVC based plastics - lasering them tends to produce Hydro Chloric Acid Fumes (generally bad for your health and the lasers!!)

Many awards shops have laser engravers that could probably handle the cutting if the covers are the appropriate material.

If anyone has an old, broken or otherwise expendable cover they want to send me, I could give it a shot on our laser.
