I was trying to remove those stickers on the right palm rest of my new HP notebook. But the sticky goo won't come off so I started scratching it, and now there are two small scratch on the originally smooth surface. Is there anything I can do to remedy this? The scratches really annoy me.

First you should have used a goo remover, but that is besides the point we are at right now. Is your laptop metal or plastic where it is scratched?

You are stuck with the scratches. No matter what you do, you are not going to be able to get rid of them. The only thing you can do, is buy a case badge you like to cover the two scratches.

If you scrape your nail over the scratch, does it catch? If so, then you wont be able to get them out. If it doesnt, then yes you can get them out, all it takes is plastic or paint polish. Light scratches are far from permanent

I have the same problem with an HP laptop.

I thought metal/plastic polishes would be easy to find in Walmart, Target, ect. but they don't seem to carry any....

For getting rid of stickers: search for the thread "Get rid of the ugly Windows Sticker"

If, as rsly33 said, you cannot catch your fingernail on the scratches, then you should be able to remove the scratches with a combination of very light automotive rubbing compound, plus a polishing compound. Before you do anything, however, verify what the surface is made of, and make sure that the product(s) you use is(are) compatible with, and will not damage, that type of surface.

I had an HP notebook before my Dell XPS and got a scratch similar to that one.

The black showing is the colour of the plastic underneath the silver gloss finish.

Rubbing compounds will NOT fix this IMO. I tried, and had no success. I ended up replacing the palmrest with one from e-bay.

That is a very good point - if the scratch has gone through the surface coating and is showing different coloured base plastic underneath the surface coating, then rubbing compounds and polishes will make the problem worse not better. About the only thing I can think of in that situation is to find a scratch filler that matches the color of the surface finish, use it to fill the scratch, and then very, very gently use a soft buffing cloth and some mild polish to blend the filled surface in with the surface of the rest of the computer.

seems very minor. you should leave it as is and try not to make it worse.

I agree, scratching usually spreads out the glue. I always use Scotch tape to remove leftover residue.

All good suggestions, but the only one that will cover and make the scratch invisible is the sticker. Other than the sticker, you can replace the palm rest or have it professionally repainted at an auto body shop, or an air brush studio. The scratches have to be filled with spot putty, sanded with wet and dry 1500 to 2000 grit paper, painted then polished. That is body work....too costly.
I just posted about cosmetically impaired tops. You might look to that for a solution
