    Does a monitor connected with a laptop by HDMI affect the performance of the laptop?

    I have a laptop (Samsung NP550P5C) with 1600x900 resolution screen, 8GB RAM, 2GB Nvidia GT 650M graphic set.

    I am planning to buy a monitor with 1920x1080 resolution to connect to this laptop (with HDMI cable).

    My usage will be mostly for watching movies, editing videos (upto 1080p) and gaming.

    Will it affect the performance of the laptop (general usage or gaming) if I use the monitor to connect to the laptop using HDMI?

    Note:
    1. I will be using only the monitor screen from then onwards and not the laptop screen.
    2. Mostly I chose either Dell S2415H or LG 24MP88HV and both these monitors have 5ms min. response time.

    It will have some effect, even if you're not using both displays, you're pushing almost half again more pixels, so your framerates are likely to be lower. You probably won't notice as much of a difference in general use as gaming.

    Gaming you will probably notice a bit of a drop, but for everything else, no difference. I use my monitor to edit videos, photos, and etc, and I cannot tell a difference. But I don't game on my computer so I don't know about that one.

    I hooked a little 1080p TV in as a second display at home last night, I think it may have had a <10 fps effect, not as much as I thought.
