I ordered a 1720 from Dell and its the matte black, would i be able to just spray the top of it with a clear coat spray paint to make it glossy or would that be too easy? (I'd probably cover the entire laptop but the top and the little Dell circle and stuff, so I guess I'm not completely retarded just have never done something like this before)

I would suggest just not doing it... think about how bad you would feel if you messed up... but I mean, not unless your experienced with painting, go for it.

Yeah, that would be best. But hey, if you do a lot of research and people from these forums help you, I'm sure you would be able to do a great paint job. But all I can say is just do research and make sure you get the right materials and so forth. Also, not sure if you have a warranty or not, but I'm almost positive that would void the warranty. You might want to call Dell up and ask.

The lid would be pretty easy to do. Read thru some of the DYI links on the resources page and do a search for lots of great info.

As far as the warranty, legally they can not void it because you painted it, however you may have to fight to get them to honor the warranty so that is something you should consider.

Here is an idea. See if you can order another lid through Dell, that way if you screw one up, you always have another. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about painting that lappy. It is a good looking machine, especially since they finally got rid of those white bands! ;)
