Saw someone mention faux leather liners from Home Depot, so while stopping by, I decided to pick one up. About $8 after taxes, but you get a lot.
Covered the whole thing.

Dude that is awesome! +rep

Very nice looking, but maybe you should have removed the stickers around the fingerprint scanner first.
-
Tell us how it holds up after a few days/weeks/months of use. Looks like you did a pretty good job with the touch pad. how does it respond/feel when using it?
-
Very nice mod. You did good with the cuts!
-
amazing mod. really cool.
but does the trackpad really work? -
I've put 3M Clear Bra over touch pads and they still work find, but the texture of this product would make me wonder a little.
-
talin: I dunno, I just like leaving all the original stickers. I thought the liner would be thick enough so it would just cover over it, but it's surprisingly really thin, like a real "skin". While peeling it, the static would actually lift the leather skin up to my arm. I wasn't expecting it to conform around the stickers.
Syndrome, __-_-_-__: The trackpad does work, even better I think. Using the bare touchpad, it gets really grippy with sweaty fingers, especially when trying to double touch to scroll. With the leather cover on it, it's just so smooth. It doesn't hinder it, such as, you wouldn't need to apply more force to move the mouse. I can just barely glide over the touchpad and it works. So far it's holding up great. I used it to cover some parts of my camera which has steeper curves. I was afraid that it would start unfolding but the adhesive is really strong. -
What about the lid?
-
amazing that the trackpad works and even better.
I would never imagine to cover that part.
Did you had to glue or the faux leather is sticky? -
What about heat? I would think it would hold it in.
-
Looks awesome. I will be curious to see how long it lasts though. I'd imagine the plastic will start to separate from the underlying material after enough time of palm sweat.
-
I'm back and covered the whole thing.
The top.
Covered over the light. It was becoming distracting for me.
The inner lid.
Now that I'm protecting everything, might as well get a keyboard skin, right?
Lights still work.
As for usage, it has palm sweat/oils from occasional use. But other than the visible shine from usage, nothing is wearing out or peeling or separating.
__-_-_-__: The faux leather liner has an adhesive at the back. It's like a sticker, just peel the back and stick it on.
Aonarch: Wasn't really thinking if covering would affect the temps. However I didn't really notice any difference on the surface temperature on the left palm area. While ocing my gpu, I was afraid the heat would expand the adhesive and turn it into some gooey mess, air bubbles and everything. But nope, it's still there like from day 1.
BUT, one thing that did affect my temperatures was the keyboard cover. Of course this might not be the case for other people with a keyboard cover. Let me explain by first showing my fan setup:
4x 40mm fans, all exhaust, not blowing in. The idea was to increase the intake of air into the CPU and GPU vents without needing a massive 120mm fan.
First I tested the idle temperatures. Was surprised that removing keyboard skin made the temps drop more, especially since it's just idle.
Then I tested something more extreme. I had my 6750m oc'ed to 800/900 and ran the test, initially with the skin on. I noticed the left side of the keyboard was hot, so I took off the skin:
and got these readings:
From the graph, you can see when I removed the skin, there is a noticeable drop. From so much air being removed from my laptop from the 4x fans, the air intake is also coming from on top of the laptop. So there is air flow that starts from on top, goes straight down through the laptop, and out the bottom. -

Love it. Looks awesome around the screen

Nice job.
Something like this would look neat on my Clevo P170HM.
The touchpad material on it is terrible but other than that it is performing good.
