performance/upgradability comes first. but the looks have to come into play, otherwise, let's face it, we would just have desktops on our laps. :)

You are a bit too extreme... but yes, I will think about it...

Beside no manifacture would ever made this kind of design for a performance laptop..

But still 100% performance for me... :)

I'm with those that goes for best bang for the buck at the lowest cost possible. I used to buy expensive laptops and treated them like they were children, got upset when I found out it wasn't perfect.

I'm no longer in the group who worries about slight case cracks, LCD backlight bleed or any of that. I just use them and when they break I either recycle or donate them to a school.

I do own a ThinkPad and a very nice looking Toshiba laptop with the fusion finish. I recently bought a Dell Vostro V13 for $339 and couldn't be happier. I take it everywhere I go and it looks nice and gets the job done. :)

To be honest I've become that way. I want a solid machine. I actually use my little 12" Hannsbook more than anything else. It's practical, small, and does my basic tasks with ease. And at home I hook it up to my TV for my kids to watch movies and shows and even YouTube.

well lots of opinions here said that you guys chose ThinkPads because of the performance, not for the look but I don't really think so...don't know why in my eyes the Thinks are quite good-looking, especially the X-series

and I'm using a black MacBook with a spare old T43 which looks incredibly new

With several Alienwares, most Roccat items and a Marauder keyboard, I've decided anything with LED's does it for me. Who cares if it does nothing so long as it lights up?

Aesthetics does play a big part when I go searching for a laptop, but if I had to choose one over the other, it'd definitely be performance. I can always just plaster stickers on my laptop or get a skin for it.

Or.... I could copy the Japanese and do a little "decoden"! Like this, but on a larger scale:

I chose my ThinkPad because of the style. There's not much performance, but just enough for simple daily tasks.

Ergonomics, then durability, then looks, then specs. By spec's though, I don't want a Pentium II or whatever, but my tasks aren't particularly demanding. A Core 2 and integrated graphics would suit me just fine.

I like subdued, angular, minimalist looks that don't draw attention. Thinkpads are pretty great in that regard and I love the look, though I have a Dell Latitude E6410 currently, and that thing nails angular + minimalism.

I personally like the balance of style with power, I guess that's why I settled on the Alienware M15X. And screen resolution also plays a big part when choosing a laptop.

The looks of the laptop is my first priority, I also find power very important. The pricetag is not so important, I am willing to pay for a stylish powerhouse.

I ended up buying a M17x-R2 (specs in sig), Nebula Red of course ;)

i run a Malibal Lotus P151HM1. Its very simple but has amazing performance. I like that. I think it looks very good and very professional.

my old laptop was an ASUS G50VT. it was very flashy with good performance. i loves the flashyness but it drew way too much attention. you look at it and know its packing. i like that about my Clevo, its a sleeper but can be unleashed.

Mix of both. Looks is important but it's useless without the performance. Same applies to men when wanting to court women. They need both looks and 'performance'.

Performance, any day. What is the use of looks if the thing doesn't perform as well as it looks? If people say my laptop looks ugly, i can show them who's actually the boss with the performance.

Although I'm not sure performance is quite the right word either. Perhaps features is better. Not everyone wants best performance, or I should say can compromise performance due to cost or other features. Like in my case, I'm evaluating a Sager NP8130 with i7-2630QM and GTX 560m vs a DV6z with AMD A9-3530MX CPU and 6770m GPU. The Sager wins hands down in performance, but the HP wins hands down with price ($400-$500 less) and battery life (2.5 hrs vs 7).

As far as looks, I don't care so much that it's "sexy" as much as it's not an eyesore. I prefer the plain look of the Sager and the HP isn't bad either.

    It depends on the person.

80% of people don't play games on a computer so they don't need a high performance machine.

    So they will choose looks.

For the people that need performance (game players), obviously performance is the # issue.

Well still, not necessarily looks as much as features for the price. I'd rather get a plain Jane laptop with a 1080p screen, blu-ray, 8GB RAM, quad core CPU for $800 than one with a 1366x768 screen, dvdrw, 4GB RAM for $1000.

I think for most people it's more "value" than brute performance.

Also, "looks" sounds so.... superficial :p In terms of a laptop, how it looks can also affect how it works in terms of ergonomics.

I used to think performance was everything but now I think a good looking laptop plus performance is important.

While newer and newer hardware will always be released if you have an aesthetically pleasing laptop you're bound to keep it around for longer.

I agree but its actually my fondness for RELIABILITY, features, performance and then somewhere down the scale aesthetics.

ill use my husbands analogy, laptops are like women the purely cosmetic ones can be expensive as heck to own and maintain. and performance and stability can be pretty weak ;)

I think for any serious hard core enthusiast, performance will always outshine looks. Especially in business settings. But there are also enthusiasts that want the best performance with killer looks. People that usually prefer Alienware/Asus high end laptops over Clevo will almost always attribute to one fact. "I'm spending $1500+ so my laptop should look like it is more than just an everyday business laptop". Certainly users like myself who simply buy on price/performance are usually insulted by these claims. But in the dual gpu market you can either get a Clevo x7200 that looks mundane or you can get a super cool glowing Alienware m18x. Both laptops have about the same performance. The m18x also has a 3 hr battery life whereas the x7200 has access to Intel Xeon/6 core cpus. Ignoring the fact that most of us "enthusiasts" picked the m18x due to Dell's superior warranty, battery life and much lower price. Your average joe will most likely always pick the Alienware if they had the choice between the two.

I will add that on a plane I was using my m18x to play Jet Set Radio on a Dreamcast emulator with a ps3 controller. I had every keyboard light turned off besides the media bar and t-pad which you can't control. The flight attendant said that I had a nice laptop and that it was cool because it had a big screen. It was relieving to hear someone comment on my laptop not saying how cool it looks with super cool neon. Other than the alien head at the front, you will never notice that it is a gaming laptop. The g73/74 has a more aggressive exterior that gives it away but the general rule to avoid stupid comments from people is to make sure you are using white or no keyboard lighting at all.

Heh, I wish I was in first class. You can fit an 18.4" laptop on the plane if the person in front of you doesn't put their seat back. It also helps that I'm relatively skinny. The laptop was half on my lap and half on the tray table. I also had a aisle seat so I could get away with it being a bit out. Though if anyone bumped they would have incurred the wrath of my flying mx518, headphones, external hdd or whatever else was in my backpack.

Not always! If I went for something like the m18x, I would prefer the X7200. I enjoy the sleek and simple design! But what if you were a criminal? Would you rather take the business, sleek and simple laptop or the flashy one with all the LEDs? :D

Might go for M17x if I can get a discount, but i'll have to disguise it somehow... Maybe duct tape! and lots of it! (jkjk)

Oddly enough I actually prefer the simple brushed aluminum on the Clevo 8170 rather than the soft touch rubberized palm rest on the m17x. Though the Clevo is superior in cooling and reseller upgraded screen. The m17x has better battery life due to GPU switching.

I wanted a Alienware desktop 5 years ago after I read about the performance and saw the chassis...but my university made us all buy 2000$ laptops through them. It was a POS. Looked like S***. Performed horribly. Outdated hardware. It was bad. The company went out of business a year later and I was stuck with it.

Now I'm looking for a gaming laptop and although I considered Asus and Sager, I honestly just like the look of Alienware more. If I'm not satisfied with it I'll bite the bullet.

What? What airline? Last time I flew, I could barely fit my legs in, and I'm not that tall, 6 foot. Put my 15" laptop on the shelf and couldn't open the lid all the way, even though I had it wedged against my body. It just wasn't usable.

In my opinion a good laptop should have both. Not excessive appearance with 500 bling bling lights but also not beefy hardware and crappy look. Some People like it plain like Clevo, some people like bling bling and go Alienware.Personally i like to have some good appearance and nice hardware.A good example is the MSI GT780 or Alienware. Some ppl of course might think that its too much but i like it..

I did it on both Air Tran and Delta. Though it was a pain in the to use the track pad. I eventually got bored and starting messing around in Autodesk Inventor and plugged in my mouse and used the open area bellow my keyboard as a mouse pad. I do have to stress that I'm 5'10" 130lbs (I used to be a sprinter in HS). But it's nice that you can use desktop replacements on your lap and not fry yourself.
