Is there anything that can be done to make the Lenovo W701ds look cosmetically better ?

Beautiful on the inside, but not so attractive on the outside.

Like what? Change materials? I don't think theres much in terms of cases for a laptop like that.

Anything to make it look more attractive. I've just had a deeper at the some of threads on this forum. Some of them seem to have been spray painted and the owners have done a really good job.

Is that possible with the Lenovo, given that I think the casing is plastic.

I couldnt imagine spray painting that laptop. If you want a laptop thats flashy instead of ruining your beatifull w701ds buy an alienware/msi for cheap and customize it with a color you like. That will satisfy your erge for something out of the ordinary.

I am not planning to paint it bright red, yellow or orange. I was thinking something like a gun metal grey or light metallic grey.

I suppose beauty is subjective, but I just find the design a real turn off. I am not normally so design concsious, but it's just feels there's no creativity or imagination or effort gone into it.

I do understand what you mean. The Lenovo is well known for its simplistic and industrial black matted finish design. To paint it other type of colour is a blasphemy.

Here's something I did to my Inspiron 1720. It has a black matted lid finish and a simple line of tape did a good job to favour the eyes:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/not...ooking-jet-black-laptop-heres-simple-mod.html

And if you can add a little more, I used laminated wood finish to the lower lid area, this helps with sweaty palms and also with a touch of that "woody" finish. This is somewhat similar to the XPS 16 with the leather accent finish:

Sometimes, design can be easily enhanced with a simple addon without making it look like it was completely over done, and without the use of paint thus still retaining the "Lenovo feel" to it.

What I like about these art tapes is, they're really really sticky and durable, and scratch resistant especially water. Maintenance or any form of wear and tear to them is non-existent. Of course, you don't really have to use the shiny and reflective tape like the one I've used, you can choose the finish and colour of the tape to your liking.

If you can open the back of the lid to tuck the ends of the tapes in, that'll be great too.

    Hope it helps...

Well, personally I think W701 design is aesthetics of the function, and wouldn't want to change it.
You would't want to paint a fighter jet a "cool looking colors" ;)

However if you think it's dull, I would recommend applying a good skin. That's better then repainting because:
    a) It actually protects original finish
    b) It could be changed when it wears down/you don't like it anymore
There are quality skin vendors out there which have skins for W701 (will fit DS too since its just lid/palmrest) in their stock.

It's personal I guess. I like the Thinkpad look a lot. I think it's nice. It's a subdued, classy black, with little bits of bright color (e.g. red on the Trackpoint, yellow power plug, blue enter key) to accent it nicely.

I think a colorful think pad would be pretty cool !! Buy a lid of eBay and paint it, or get it powder coated, it would be sick. :D

I knows it's not the same model but here is a thinkpad t60 from colorware,

I think the only color I would be willing to paint a thinkpad is white.

Otherwise, it would have to be something subtle like you would paint a room.
