I am brand new to Sony Vaio's. One my Apple notebook I was able to take the top cover plate off and change the LED bulb in there to make the apple glow blue. I am now using a Sony Vaio CR series, and was wanting to know if I could take the top cover off and remove the Silver Vaio and place a clear or even white vaio cut out in and get place LED's behind it and make it glow blue. I have tried to google it, but have not had any luck on finding the instructions. I was thinking about pulling the top cover off, but I backed off since I have never worked with Sony before.

    Thanks for the help,
    Keyur Patel

I have tried the company website but they do not offer anything like that. I know that I will have to find a vaio cover that has a clear or white logo, and then I can go out and by small LEDs to place beind the cover to make them lights up. Then that brings up another problem where to get the power from to run the LEDs.

Its one of them situations where you would need to take off the plastic that surrounds the screen and have a look at whats going on, its probably a standard sort of bulb that you could change for a different colour.

Most likely that VAIO logo is just an emblem pasted on the lid. I don’t think there is a hole behind it, which means you’ll have to first cut the lid; not an easy task. Also, unlike in macbooks, there are no LEDs inside the lid, you will have to draw a power line from the motherboard and put in a new bulb; USB port is one option.

I am also owner of VAIO CR, and I think it´s a bit unreal to make something like this. At least you´ll lose warranty..

Losing your warranty depends; first, read the terms to see what it covers, you may be surprised if you read it carefully enough. Second, while the OP would undoubtedly lose warranty coverage on the casing, and possibly on the LCD (though I find that less likely), and maybe, just maybe, on the USB ports if he draws current from a USB port, I don't see any reason why the OP would, e.g., lose warranty on the CPU or the hdd or CD/DVD.

Regarding the warranty I am really not that concerned. The Laptop was 800 bucks. I gonna sit down tonight and see if I can find instructions on how to pull the cover off. Once I find that then I will see if it is worth the effort. Talking to a few folks around here they say that I will not have the room to place a bulb in there. Man I wish there was a write up on how to do this. I would really love to have this modification. Well I am not brave enough to open the cover, but I know my dad is capable of doing it. Unfortunately he said he would not pull it off unless there is something broken in there. For now this is a no go unless i can find a good detailed write up.

Everyone Thanks for the help. If I find a write up on this then I will get back to you guys and let you know how it worked out for me.

    Once Again Thanks A LOT

I'd get the service manual first, were I you (not the user manual, but the service manual). It'll have exploded diagrams and will make it much, much easier to dismantle the thing.

I've got the old VAIO Z1A from 2003, which has a silver "VAIO" inset into the lid at the back of the lcd. I've had that open before, and it certainly doesn't go straight through on mine. Near as I can tell, when they made it, they impressed the "VAIO" symbols into the outer surface of the plastic when it was molded, so it doesn't really make any sort of an impression on the inside.

In order to do what you want to do, you're basically going to have to cut through the lid's plastic within the "VAIO" emblem in order to get an opening that goes all the way through. Then, you'll have to put some sort of translucent material onto the inside of the lid (so that it shows through the hole you've just cut, but doesn't require that you try and trim it precisely so it fits like a puzzle-piece into that hole), and then you'll have to rig up the lights you want.

One thing to keep in mind is, once you cut open the lid, you'll probably get some light bleeding through just from the backlight for the lcd itself.

Since the job'll involve cutting, I'd suggest buying one or two spare lids used off the internet and practicing on them first before you start tearing into the lid you actually want to put back onto the computer.

Wow. I am glad you told me all that. I am not sure if I even want to try this anymore. I never did think about the light bleeding through on the other side. This is something that I am going to have to think really hard about. I think I can stick with the Silver Vaio than not have one at all and have a ugly hole in it.

    Thanks for all the help.
