Hi..
i'm almost done with my paint job..
my first one! and i got lots of problem.
I have a little problem right now and would like your help if you don't mind ^_^
I've already applied clear coat and the surface is not very slippery.. it is smooth but a bit like sticky feeling.. is there any thing you apply on it to make it nicer?
I'll start assembling it all tomorrow
because according to a friend i need to add thermal paste before as it dried while being left out.
My color scheme is White/Red/Black
the manta ray is a copy of a tattoo found on the net.. my friend redrew it on a lot of masking tape pasted on the cover and then she cut it too! The purpose of the design was to hide the little red that got spread on the white![]()
I'll post more pics as soon as possible ^_^
here are 2 for the moment..
the lines are a bit weird but they were a bit corrected after with wet sanding! Those pics are around middle stage. They were wet sanded.. corrected with spray paint again and clear coated
i know it's not a good job but i tried ^_^ for me it's ok![]()

vinceboiii Animals are friends, not food.
wow nice pictures, it fits with ur icemat haha i like that design, well done!
-
Oh yea i just love icemat ^_^
Btw, if anyone is new to paintjob like me.. try avoiding white as a major color .. it's so painful to work with! any little mess is soooo noticeable! i had to restart twice .. took me 6 days to finish that.
Steps i did
- disassemble laptop
- masking
- sanding (didn't know u had to wet the sanding paper...got veryyyy tired)
- 2 thin layers of primer
- 4 thin layers of paint
- i painted the red details first..
- then all the white
- 1 thin layer of black for the arts
- i got to know the real meaning of wet sanding.. if i hadn't known that.. i would not have finished.. restarted over and over..
- 5-6 layers of clear coat till i like the gloss effect.
- removing masking tapes... cleaning the little mess of paint on some masked parts
- assembly
Lessons i learnt: wet sanding is VERYYYY EASY compared to not wet!
- White is hard to work with
- Masking tapes are annoying
- Primer should be done on a scuffed surfaced imo.. i didn't scuff the first time.. just wet sanded and the paint was different..
- It's not so hard to do.. even if does not comes out perfect.
I hope i could help others. I had some guidance from stuff79 and from many threads of this forum. Thanks a lot everyone -
Nice job man! It's VERY nice for a first paintjob.
-
Great job dude(t)
Looks awesome!!!
+rep for having guts to go through with it -
Thank you
-
Pretty sweet job!
-
Do you have any pics of what the laptop looked like before you did anything to it???
I just want to compare -
-
-
oooh no.. it was plain black with some grey flakes in it on the cover..
and the upper part of the keyboard was black.. and the lower part grey.
the bottom.. i didn't modify remained black
sorry i forgot to include that before ^_^
here is a picture i had before
edit: i included a picture showing the surfaces to be painted with primer on it.
edit:
added a link that looks like the same design.. but the MSI on the cover is not the same.. i have MEGABOOK written instead on mine which glowed white.. now it's glowing RED

very nice, good job

ty
does anyone know how to make the surface glide more?
the wrist rest glides very nicely now. it lost the sticky feeling. -
Nice
It looks a lot better than the boring gray paint.
Not sure how to make it less sticky though -
awsome job dude
less sticky by clear coat and a long time to fuullllllly dry -
Awesome....just awesome! That look's fantastic!
I don't think I would have the patience in trying something like this...

-
Ohhh dude, that is sick as hell. Im jealous
,
nice job though very well done.
-
Cin -
wow, so you totaly repainted it white! Not just the blasck design!
Even cooler -
Too bad I have just the one laptop
I would probably find some plastic, similar to the lid to practice on -
thanks everyone
RaYYaN i practiced on a battery charger's cover first
sanding is the worst part
for disassembling and assembling.. i had 2 videos i found online
then the rest is quite easy.. if you get errors with spray paint.. wet sanding can solve it -
Practice, makes perfect!

I am defiantly going to spray mine
But I am just waiting until the warranty is up, because spraying it will void the warranty and I'll wait just to be safe
Also, you sprayed the actual design on, as opposed to someone putting a sticker on a painted base right??? -
Yes. a friend of mine redrew the Manta Ray on a lot of masking tape already stuck on the cover. Then cut using an x-acto knife right on it.
The easy part was mine ^_^ spraying, then wet sanding it a bit as it got a little level higher than the surface.. makes it look even. -
Cool
Your friend is good at art
I like drawing similar stuff (tribal art and the like) so I'll probably mask of flames or a design the same way your friend did, once I re-paint the whole thing, and sprayy those after -
yup she's a graphic design student ^_^
the main image was a tattoo googled. i'm in process of painting my touchpad too
but those who have painted it didn't give enough details on the process -
I think the trick is too keep it thin, so the touchpad is still usable -
i very rarely use the touchpad.. it's always disabled
the thing i'm looking into is whether i need to sand it before, use primer.
and then add clear coat to it too..
it seems clear coat will give it a glossy look which will be weird..
and sanding might not be good at all.. -
I have no clue
But someone who does should help you out
best of luck -
for a first job it was good.. no major probs with the paint after 6 months
think i might now be eligible to giving tips -
This look awesome, good job
-
thank you
-
cool design. great job!
-
awesome MSI painting looks too cool for words
-
Looks really clean, I like it
-
nice job!
do you have a guide when you disassembled your laptop? or just go with your instinct?
i also have gx600 and would like to experiment with it. -
Hey nice job! Having a minor issue that you might be able to help out with.
I'm in the process of painting my laptop with Krylon Fushion Satin-Black. I wanted to stay away from anything that would attract finger prints. Right now, I've applied one coat of Kylon Clear Gloss and still waiting for it to dry.
My question is... I'd like to make my finish a bit more shinier and smoother, and maybe lose just a touch of the 'matte" finish. Should I accomplish this by sanding? Rubbing compound or wax? Thanks -
ooh i just noticed these posts.
for the disassembling and assembling - i had 2 videos i found online. they are pretty easy to follow. looks like industry instructions
enoya34 - i used that thing after spray.. clear coat.. i applied i think around 6 layers.. it gets very shiny and at start it was possible for me to see reflections ^_^
i wish i can get another laptop and repaint ^_^ -
Heyas,
I recently joined the painting world of IT gear and have a question or two.
About the process - 600 sand paper the surface to make it gritty, wash away the residue, lay down primer (that would be white I guess, if I am going for yellow final), 2 layers aprox, then 4-6 layers of the primary colour, then layering down the clear coat for glossy look with Wet-sanding and done? Is this the process which worked for you?
Another question - does your paint/clear coat leave certain smell on the item? I wonder if it is there to stay or if it can be washed away somehow.. Cheers!
-Mel -
the sand papers number.. in my country they are not the same..
but yea.. i made it a little gritty first.. very slightly..
then primmer.. i used grey primmer.. even though my main color was white.
2-3 layers primmer. (sanding with fine sandpaper in between each layer.. use water on the sand paper, its easier to do these parts)
I did apply wet sanding in between every layer of every type of paint..
except clear coat i think .
and there is no smell to the clear coat.. and it is there to stay.
Enjoy the procedure Mel -
Ah, wonderful, thanks for help out.
I guess the smell comes from the workshop I did the painting in as its full of all sorts of things.. from chainsaws to paints to pickles in jars
I did work first on one of my routers as having a fancy Lamborghini-yellow one sure makes an appearance.. however, I did not achieve the nice glossy/glass-like surface.. I did only 3 layers of Clear-gloss spray thou.. So More the merrier in this case I reckon?
Cheers!

slightly old, but exec if you still post:
what did you do to get rid of the "sticky feeling" of the new paint? -
nothing! the sticky feeling at the end ( after the layers of clear coat) goes away by itself within a week.
just allow it to dry properly i guess.
Good luck ^_^ -
wow very nice mate
can i hire you to do my notebook for a paintjob lol
ill pay you by hour ^^ -
How is possible to keep dust away while the paint is drying?Unbelievable paint job.Congratulations.
