    Hi all...

The other day I bought one of those chinese made metal pad coolers off fleabay. The problem is that it doesn't blow quite enough air. On the packaging and seller's description it says 44CFM, but it doesn't even blow a quarter of that. (I never really believe eBay specs etc)

But I am surprised it blows barely anything?

It is a single fan design, and the fan looks quite capable. Is it worth possibly pulling it apart, and powering it with say 12V DC or something? Just to get more air...

    Thanks!

No matter what you do, it's probably never going to move enough air to make a difference.

depends whats the voltage on the fans? you can go as high of voltage on the fans as they are rated and maybe a little more but any above rating will shorten their lifespan. Also amke sure they are getting enough ampers.

You will probably burn out the fan. Go to the accessory subforum and go to laptop coolers guide. Then you can ask what cooler pad is the best for your laptop.

The only cooler I have seen make a noticeable difference is the Cryo NZXT with upgraded fans running off molex connectors. Even then its marginal at best. Currently I have the whole bottom plate off my precision m4400 sitting atop the cooler and its making a decent difference, but the laptop isnt in a mobile state nor do I feel like taking the bottom cover off to maximize airflow is a worthwhile act.

The main problem is USB powered fans just dont get enough power to really push air.

that is why you drill holes in bottom plate

You can always buy another bottom plate to drill holes in.

Although, the precision m4600 has the heatsinks on top, under the keyboard. lulz :p
So it will only work to drill or cut a big hole where the fan intake is on the bottom.

I disagree that coolers don't work. Most people are probably using them wrong. Just because the fans on the cooler don't line up with the laptop fans doesn't mean you can't move the laptop and position it on the cooler so the fans align.

This should be a sticky. They are more cosmetic than anything else.
If your needed to do that, it would mean your product is inferior.

When my Molex ac adapter comes I will post showing how my setup works. 3 x 120mm running at max cfm (90ish) with plenty of space above and bellow to pull and push a good amount of air. Trust me it works and helps, but isn't a necessity and isn't a huge effect.

Agreed. I don't need a cooler for my server, but I have a bit more peace of mind using it and why wouldn't you run one if it was laying around. I had a bunch of fans and a usless stock version of the cryo nzxt so why not put them together and make a better version?

    Hmm 90cfm x 3 > ~48cfm x 3. :p

I run mine at 100% and they are loud.

Wow, so we have started talking about jet aircraft... (Btw 747-800 or A380?) :p

I have accepted the fact that most notebook coolers are somewhat useless. Eventually I did over-volt my cooler (running on 7.5DC now, not sure if it can handle 12V) and it went from being useless to slightly useful.

I would drill the bottom of my laptop, but unfortunately I don't have a drill. (I am a student lol.) Actually the intake vent covers a VERY small proportion of the fan's surface area, which sucks.

Nonetheless I will look at simply taking off some bottom covers, as it always sits on the cooler. Thanks for the replies guys.

is it a metal cooler? i would be careful with removed bottom panel because of static and electric currents and grounds.

Also your fans will say their rated voltage on them.
