people have nice setups
-
Yes indeed they do. They are making me jealous!
-
!! haha i also want that keyboard haha...just couldn't justify spending 70bucks on it to replace an already awesome kb haha
-
Although this ain't mine, I just had to post these, MMO addiction room!
-
New laptopppp XD
-
that is to many monitors. he has his mice jimmy rigged with chopsticks. there is no way that could be remotely accurate. I certainly wouldnt wanna raid with it.
-
Maybe he makes a living creating new EVE characters and selling them once their learning skill is maxed. :/
-
Hahaha, or perhaps he enjoys battles where he is in complete control of his fighters. Kudos to you for recognizing EVE Online XD
-
Haha. I tried the trial, and I found it pretty fun. Not something I'd chance to get involved in though. EVE's a whole other world, not just a game, and I'd lose myself in that.
-
There is a guy on my wow server that multi boxes 5 druids. While I enjoy the game from time to time thats just sickening. While Id love to have a monitor setup like that, it would not be for MMOs.
-
I'd have six Hockey games on Gamecenter Live with that setup.
This would be heaven.
-
Eh. I wouldn't like that multiple monitor setup unless the desktop was extended onto all the screens with (multiple Virtual Machines running) using ONE mouse and not EIGHT mice.
-
GameBoy Advance spotted!
-
this is my study room, still in the process of setting up, and it's winter here at the moment.
and in case you're wondering, I have another bed for the ladies... -
I spotted my self
-
lol yep. pokemon firered
-
-
I noticed your Tim Horton's coffee was "Toujours Frais" moving near Montreal? :O
-
Nah, haha, Ottawa.
So half and half, just happened to be that side of the cup.
-
Nice setups everyone.
It has been a while since I posted so here's a quick tour of mine:
The whole setup is L-Shape like. Here is the good part, M17x-R2 with 2 external monitors:
And here is the other part of the L:
I'm not running Eyefinity by the way. The left monitor typically has Linux or Mac on it full screen. The right monitor is mostly for videos, stock market, news, and other entertainment. The main screen is for gaming and work.
Next stop: A nice HDTV for the top.
In all honesty, after using 3 monitors, there is no way I could ever go back to 2 or less. -
So you have both those monitors on your alienware?
Could you describe the hookup please? -

Warakawa thats a neat 'fort' you have there.
WaR: I wish there were 17in WUXGA external LCDs on the market as I would buy some in a heartbeat. Would be nice for the limited desk space I have.
Here is my updated work setup:Attached Files:

I am with you 100%, during the summers I "borrow" my brothers little 17 inch 720p tv for a monitor. But now I have 2 computers side by side and it is very nice. But I wish I could get Synergy to work to have one mouse and keyboard.
-
Nice ones.
Yeah Liquid. I actually thought about getting some WUXGA panels and mod them but then realized it was not worth it, especially when I got these square ones from Dell at a sweet price. My current setup suits me perfectly.
Tell me about it bro. As far as multi computers is concerned, I stay away from having more than 2. The ones on my sig are the only computers I own. And they are totally different and have different uses. There is no way I would be able to use more than 1 computer efficiently, so kudos to you. Virtual machines on the other hand, are a different story. Seamless Ubuntu fullscreen on second monitor ftw!
-
Doing papers side by side with email, hulu and facebook on a 1280x800 screen was a chore, but doable. I should have taken a screenshot.
-
how do you connect 2 external monitors to a laptop while still running the laptop monitor?
Windows7 only allow me to use two monitors at any one time -
Actually it's quite simple. One is a regular, the other one is USB. No performance difference between monitors at this level.
One last pic with my cell
-
Oh...VERY clever with that setup.
-
I still don't understand, how can you connect the monitors with USB??
I connect my two monitors with VGA and displayport/DVI. -
it's like a cave
-
Man caves FTW!!
Dang that looks beautiful I almost didnt even realize you had a laptop in the middle with a quick 5sec glance as it fits so seemless with the other 2 monitors. Certainly must be nice to use that every day.
-
yes, it's my batcave, however, I only have two monitors, I need more monitors !!!!
-
Can you link me/us to one of these USB to [something like VGA/DVI or HDMI] cable?
Btw your setup is gorgeous O_O I wish I could do that but I think the M15x only supports 2 screens
-
This is news to me guys. I thought USB-to-DVI adapters were pretty common. Anyway, Google USB-to-DVI. That's the actual name of it. The reason I won't link to a specific one is because it's really trial and error. I went through 2 before settling with one.
These adapters can now support 1920x1200 resolutions. However at this resolution you will notice a slight decrease in performance (only from the USB monitor, and particularly in fullscreen HD video). The lower you go, the less impact it will have. In my setup I see no difference between performance. I suggest you get your adapter from a place that allows returns easily so you can try another one if it doesn't fit your needs.
Most, if not all, typically use the DisplayLink chip, so they will work the same way, but they do vary. You have to pick one that gives you the resolution you want, read reviews, check dual card capabilities, etc. Like I said trial and error.
The monitor is mostly powered by the CPU, and it uses a negligible amount of resources. The other one is connected in the typical way. I use VGA.
This is not like Eyefinity. You can't really game on all three monitors. But that isn't the point. It's really for more screen real estate.
I hope it is clear now. Now let's see some setups
-
WaR While thats a nice setup the resolution on your dellienware must be set to WXGA+ or 1440x900 in order to work like that with those LCDs. I am hoping for a triple LCD eyefinity setup on top of the internal LCD when I get mine in and the funds for the screens.
The problem with USB video is that you cannot game or watch videos on it. -
Sorry I post here as I have not received my m17x R2 system yet. But I simply must say that you have some nice books on that shelf(C++, calculus etc.).
-
Along with some concrete structures, structural analysis and mechanics books.
Civil Engineer?
-
You cannot game. This is true. However, I can watch videos full screen all day long, without any lag. Flash games are OK if you wanna get technical. I can even have Linux full screen and play videos full screen inside it. Lol.
Like I said, I don't run Eyefinity (and care nothing for multi-monitor gaming really) The monitors are the highest resolution available for 17". And my Alienware's resolution is WUGXA (1920x1200). It works fine, I don't see why it would have to be 1440x900. That resolution on a 17" laptop is just silly (I know they exist though). Maybe the seamless wallpaper threw you off, but that's because I did the wallpaper myself to make it fit.
Technically Structural Engineer, but yes Civil engineer in the end
-
Yeah the seamless wallpaper threw me off. The reason I assumed no video is when I use my USB portable LCD it cannot do anything but the very basic stuff. But then again this may be due to the fact that its USB powered and driven. Oh and I agree that anything below WUXGA on a 17in is pretty lame. One of the many reasons why I went with an R2 over the r1 m17x.
-
My room is messy as hell atm. It's basically a white Ikea rounded (i.e. the desk curves around) desk with 3 external hard drives, PS3, monitor, computer, laptop, screen & Bose 2.1 system. I would post pictures of it but I'd feel ashamed with compared to the neatness of other people's. I'm going to be changing things around anyway, so hopefully I can et a decent photo soon.
Had a look on about 20 pags so far, and I love the creativeness
EDIT: Got bored, shuffled my desk around to make it 'neat'.
Stuff in shot:
Alienware m15x, Two seagate expansion drives (one is 1tb, one is 500gb), One Seagate BlackArmor WS 110 (for eSATA and moving data around with me), 2 year old custom spec PC (I had a small budget so it has performed admirably for me), 17" Hanns G HW173A, Acoustic Solutions 19" TV (I bought it to play my Wii on, but my mother has commandeered it for herself, so I use it for my PS3 & second monitor if needs be), PS3 & Bose Companion 3 series II speaker system.
As you can see, cable management is not optimized, but I don't mind it that much (it was much much worse before, as the screens were the other way around, with the PC sitting on the desk, making it cramped and a wire haven). As soon as I move out in the end of August, the first thing I'm doing is buying a proper desk. -
-
I thought it was a microwave lol
-
You say that because you havent trully experienced eyefinity gaming. I used to have 3 screens but never bothered with eyefinity. then thought having everything for it, I might as well just buy a DVI adaptor and man I regret it, because now I have a hard time playing on one screen only. the intensity and immersion is uncomparable to anything.
Just like you said you cant go back to anything below 3 screens, anyone that owns a eyefinity setup has a hard time going back to anything less.
Just...trust me
-
I trust you and I know what you mean. I have seen it live and it is pretty awesome. The thing is, I am not really a hardcore gamer anyway. I play occasionally and own like 7 games. My Alienware animal is more of a workstation
Nonetheless, if I do get a couple of 5870's with Eyefinity support for my laptop, I would be lying if I said I would not give Crysis 2 a little try by then. But I would look more forward to adding perhaps a couple more monitors, larger ones, on top of my current setup. -
Now Im worried. My m17x is being built and may ship within this year, and my plan was to get some nice LCDs for birthday and christmas and do a triple LCD gaming setup. But now hearing about this side effect I don't know if I will do it cause I do alot of mobile computing and I dont want to feel cramped while away from the office or home. This is the reason I gave my thinkpad o my mom. I loved that rig, but the screen resolution was just too low for my needs and wants.

While I like your setup, I prefer my LCDs to be on the right of the laptop but still nice. As for your cable management, well I cannot say anything as mine looks the same.
Seems I do good cable management inside desktops and cars, but no where else.
Show us your computer room 2!
