the krylon people state that you dont need to use clear to protect the krylon fusion paints.
I find that you need clear no matter what, because it helps add depth to the surface and it keep everything clean.
What I recommend you doing, is drive around and look for car spray shops. They will have clear gloss which they can very easily spray over your laptop parts. (Just make sure the laptop is not together when painted)
Also make sure the clear air dries. If you put it in an oven/kiln the plastic will melt.
Or if you cant find any spray shops willing to help, you just need to buy whatever clear Krylon sells.
I find that spraypaint manufacturers use different chemicals, so if you use krylon paint, use krylon clear coat.
Whatever you do, dont use rustoleum, it bubbles like crazy and comes out really bad.

Is there a full blown laptop painting guide somewhere? And how much do all the paints usually cost?

Knightz, you should try both kinds of clear on some hrylon fusion paint samples, so that you can compare which is better.
I have never used krylon clear, so I wouldnt know if either one is better than the other.

Hep! you can get spraypaint for like $3-8 a can, and for professional paints they can cost between $100 and $300 a pint.

I have a bunch of prices in my thread on painting. The HOK flake and the Peterbilt two part paint were very expensive considering I needed a lot of it.

A pro paint job will cost more than $500, but if you have an airbrush, you can do it for less yourself.

I just tested Triple-Thick Crystal Clear Glaze (using it soon for a laptop paint job) and it's pretty good. Just make sure you spray in quick passes (as per instructions), or you might overdo it and the excess will run.

I can't offer comparisons to automotive clearcoat, though.

    the clear dissolved your paint?
I dont think that is possible. The clear coat is not designed to do that. What does the triple thick clear can say?
Does it say it can be used on plastics, or with spray paint?

their are some clears which are only for metals, which is why I asked if said it was for spray paint.

One other question, did you let the paint dry for at least a day before applying the clear coat?
If you did not, than the clear could loosen the paint and cause it to dissolve back in the clear, which is not good.

Can you post an image of what happened.

    You used glaze?
Glazing is not to make a clear surface, its generally used to fill in pores in ceramics. (It states on the glaze page: Non-firing glaze for polymer clay, bisque, plaster and more)

You should have bought the crystal clear.
You made a simple mistake, I am sorry that you had to fall into the trap.
You should be able to sand the paint off with 400 grit sandpaper or so, and you can start over. Thats the good thing about paint, it can be removed.

    Good luck,

    K-TRON

Well the last paint did look good before the "clear".
Just make sure you leave a good day for the paint to driy before applying the clear coat.

I ended up buying this: http://www.krylon.com/products/acrylic_crystal_clear

It turned out pretty good except I re-assembled the laptop when the paint was still a little soft, which messed up a lot of stuff. I need to learn patience. 2 hours is not long enough after spraying the last coat :(

Anyway, I am not sure I am going to even re-paint it, I will just deal with the scratches, as I just painted a Pentium 3 laptop to learn about laptop painting.

hep, you should wait about 5-6hours between coats for optiumum drying, and than for clear you need to wait much longer, usually overnight or a whole day.

Well luckily you tested on a old system before painting your own, because now you have some more skill and idea on how to paint it.

knightz, you bought glaze, not clear. Their is a difference. If you used clear on the mouse and it also removed the paint, than I dont know what to tell you.
I guess the only way for you to get clear is to go to an auto place and see if they can spray some for you.

The laptop looks really nice though :D
