Hey, the laptop looks great. I just have one question, though it's somewhat unrelated (save having to do with paint). I'm currently planning on painting my old Toshiba and it'll be white and I wanted to do some black stencil work on the front lid. If you were to do this, would you put on the stencil, spray it lightly, let dry, and repeat a few times or should I just do it once slightly heavier?

BTW, I'd probably be following these instructions as they are the most complete in terms of steps that I've found: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=110513

    Thanks man

Did you paint over all the writing like where it says "Dell" under the screen and the other parts like "Inspiron" on the top of the lid? Did you spray clear coat or anything on the Dell emblem on top of the lid?

Yup, sanded the printed logos and writing flat and then sprayed over it. I completely masked off the Dell emblem so there is no clearcoat applied to it.

Thanks, also I talked to Dell in regards to warranty coverage. This is the log. The service contracts terms seem to confirm what the agent said.

I got a spray entitled "Acrylic Formulation: Clear Lacquer". Is this basically the same as clearcoat/ would this be ok for spraying over the spraypaint as a last glossy, coat?

Should be fine. Just try your best to get the clearcoat from the same manufacturer to make sure the paint is compatible with the clearcoat. Good luck!

That is pretty bad. You should have done the light color as a base and then the dark color over top. It would look better that way. Also, possibly used plastic filler to make the lid flat instead of having the groves on it. Just saying incase you would do it over again ;)

I would love to do this on my lappy when its holiday time, although my approach would be a bit different: Id buy all the panels and the laptop body, then spray paint it and then if it turns out well, I'll use that body for my lappy. Is it possible to get a new body panels for dell laptops?

No can do. You have to completely disassemble the laptop because you dont want the spray paint to get into the internals. It will be really difficult to clean up the mess if it gets in there. Spray painting takes time and patience.. :D

i need to paint my HP DV1000 bad.. The speaker grill is scratched and the top lid is also a mess. Can you help me out? The lid is two pieces i'm guessing. The top is factory painted and the inside is black plastic? I just need to paint the top lid? How do I take the lid apart? Same with the grills. Do the grills just pop out?

    ^^ Gawd I'm an idiot...

Get a disassembly guide, you should be able to find one online, if not then contact HP Tech Service and ask them.

Since I was answering a question, I don't feel too bad for bumping this, given how beautiful it is...

That paint job is amazing... I've tried painting things like PS1 light guns, and I dunno if it's just that I'm using poor paint/gloss or what, but you've given me the motivation to try again with what you've suggested...

Once again... That looks like a factory-sprayed car for god's sake... Man...

Hey man. Thanks. Take your time prepping up whatever it is you're spraying. Try your skills on small projects and as you get better move up to something bigger. In regards to the paint, just try to get paint like Dupont which you can find in rattle cans. These are very good paints to use and highly recommended. :D

I'm glad to see you're still checking this thread, though I dunno how your ego can still fit in the house...

My problem is gonna be sourcing good paints and glosses (I'm in a small town in austalia, not easy to get variety)... I tried spraying a pool cue, and the paint was fine, but the gloss was... sticky.

Like, I don't know what your laptop feels like now (I'm hoping like glass, lol), but I had to sand the cue back to bare wood because it was so bad I couldn't slide it through my fingers properly when playing... What kind of store would I buy the 3M Gloss from, I'm pretty sure I haven't seen anything decent at the local hardware place...

I think I'll try repainting that cue as one of my practises... Once again, thanks - this article's spurred me on to thinking about a dozen projects I've been meaning to do for ages, it's great to see what you can acheive DIY...

Only thing is, I'm in love with my M50SV's factory finish... I think I'll have to eventually try one of my/my mate's old laptops lol...
