Hey, the laptop looks great. I just have one question, though it's somewhat unrelated (save having to do with paint). I'm currently planning on painting my old Toshiba and it'll be white and I wanted to do some black stencil work on the front lid. If you were to do this, would you put on the stencil, spray it lightly, let dry, and repeat a few times or should I just do it once slightly heavier?
BTW, I'd probably be following these instructions as they are the most complete in terms of steps that I've found: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=110513
Thanks man -
nice stuff looks like that lambo laptop

Did you paint over all the writing like where it says "Dell" under the screen and the other parts like "Inspiron" on the top of the lid? Did you spray clear coat or anything on the Dell emblem on top of the lid?

Thanks, also I talked to Dell in regards to warranty coverage. This is the log. The service contracts terms seem to confirm what the agent said.
Me: "If I paint my laptop, would it still be covered under warranty?"
05/28/2008 11:29:26PM Agent (Chetan_121516): "Yes, it would be covered. However in case any damage occur due to paint, Dell would not be responsible for it."
05/28/2008 11:29:47PM Agent (Chetan_121516): "May I know why exactly you would like to paint the laptop?"
05/28/2008 11:30:57PM Me: "For looks, I think I want it to be black and red instead of the default silver and white."
05/28/2008 11:31:41PM Agent (Chetan_121516): "You can check with sales in case they have red and black outer cover."
05/28/2008 11:31:53PM Agent (Chetan_121516): "Please do not paint the laptop, it might cause damage."
05/28/2008 11:31:58PM Me: "I'll see."
05/28/2008 11:32:04PM Me: "Are there any terms and conditions of the warranty that I can read? I don't remember ever seeing any documents about it."
05/28/2008 11:32:45PM Agent (Chetan_121516): "Let me check it. If it is available online."
05/28/2008 11:33:33PM Agent (Chetan_121516): "Please give me 2-3 minutes."
05/28/2008 11:34:25PM Agent (Chetan_121516): "Thank you for staying online. I appreciate your patience."
05/28/2008 11:34:29PM Agent (Chetan_121516): " http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/services/main/service_contracts?~ck=ln&c=us&cs=19&l=en&lnki=0&s=dhs"Click to expand... -
Oh jeez here is an awful paint job on my old one

I got a spray entitled "Acrylic Formulation: Clear Lacquer". Is this basically the same as clearcoat/ would this be ok for spraying over the spraypaint as a last glossy, coat?

nizzy1115 said: ↑That is pretty bad. You should have done the light color as a base and then the dark color over top. It would look better that way. Also, possibly used plastic filler to make the lid flat instead of having the groves on it. Just saying incase you would do it over againClick to expand...

What did you use to clearcoat it?

-
Wow dude, it looks fantastic. I`d like a guide too.
-
that looks sick!! sounds like it was a lot of work though. for real though that makes a normal laptop look like it's something a bit more pricey. very good job
-
That is the sickest paint job i have ever seen, a rep point comming your way dude......
You should seriously consider doing it as a part time job. I know i would pay you to do mine
Man that makes that Dell look Swwweeeeeeeeeeeeeetttt!!!!! -
I would love to do this on my lappy when its holiday time, although my approach would be a bit different: Id buy all the panels and the laptop body, then spray paint it and then if it turns out well, I'll use that body for my lappy. Is it possible to get a new body panels for dell laptops?
-
Very nice work
-
I know this is pretty old, but HOLY SHIZ! Nice work!

stuff79 said: ↑No can do. You have to completely disassemble the laptop because you dont want the spray paint to get into the internals. It will be really difficult to clean up the mess if it gets in there. Spray painting takes time and patience..Click to expand...

The top is factory painted and the inside is black plastic? I just need to paint the top lid? How do I take the lid apart? Same with the grills. Do the grills just pop out?Click to expand...
Since I was answering a question, I don't feel too bad for bumping this, given how beautiful it is...
That paint job is amazing... I've tried painting things like PS1 light guns, and I dunno if it's just that I'm using poor paint/gloss or what, but you've given me the motivation to try again with what you've suggested...
Once again... That looks like a factory-sprayed car for god's sake... Man... -

Get a disassembly guide, you should be able to find one online, if not then contact HP Tech Service and ask them.

stuff79 said: ↑Hey man. Thanks. Take your time prepping up whatever it is you're spraying. Try your skills on small projects and as you get better move up to something bigger. In regards to the paint, just try to get paint like Dupont which you can find in rattle cans. These are very good paints to use and highly recommended.Click to expand...
My problem is gonna be sourcing good paints and glosses (I'm in a small town in austalia, not easy to get variety)... I tried spraying a pool cue, and the paint was fine, but the gloss was... sticky.
Like, I don't know what your laptop feels like now (I'm hoping like glass, lol), but I had to sand the cue back to bare wood because it was so bad I couldn't slide it through my fingers properly when playing... What kind of store would I buy the 3M Gloss from, I'm pretty sure I haven't seen anything decent at the local hardware place...
I think I'll try repainting that cue as one of my practises... Once again, thanks - this article's spurred me on to thinking about a dozen projects I've been meaning to do for ages, it's great to see what you can acheive DIY...
Only thing is, I'm in love with my M50SV's factory finish... I think I'll have to eventually try one of my/my mate's old laptops lol... -
Woooooooooooow
