Seeing all these threads about people who have painted their laptops seems really cool, and I was thinking of doing the same thing. Should I do it? If so, can someone point me to some instructions of how exactly to do this.

I may honestly give up and buy a role of Carbon Fiber for it (I know, I already said I was doing this but...). I was thinking of painting it a dark glossy blue colour.

    ^^ That color, but glossier!

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Joel.

the vinyl would be so much faster, easier, cheaper and has a smaller chance of being messed up.

On the other hand...painting sounds like a fun weekend project. There's a bunch of guides already floating around on NBR. The gist of them - take your time and make sure to wetsand.

Are you thinking about painting your D620? If you do, post pics! I have a D820 that looks very similar and would like to see what it looks like painted.

I decided to go with spray paint because:

Spray paint covers everything well, from edge to edge the color will be perfect if i do it properly.

Spray paint will really shine after polishing unlike vinyl skins.

The spray painted laptops and desktop cases i've seen look amazing and there are enough sets of instructions out there to make me feel that i've got enough info to start the project on.

The only downside is the sanding and waiting for the paint to dry, its time consuming

I hope you don't mean real carbon fiber. :D That will be near impossible to apply to the contours of a laptop. If you get the vinyl stuff make sure to get the stretchy kind that auto shops use for customizing. Combined with a heat gun or hair dryer, you can stretch it to take to the corners and contours of the laptop. I would go with vinyl myself. It will be more durable than paint, and you can always remove it if you want to sell the laptop or get bored.

Nah, not real carbon fiber! Just the vinyl stuff. I was thinking paint because it can get that "shine" to it, as apposed to vinyls, which just don't. I'm really uncertain about it at the moment, and I'll probably just go with the vinyl.

Who knows, just getting some thoughts and ideas.

I don't think I'm going to paint it now, if I ever wanted to sell it, then, I may run into some dramas. I'll probably buy a roll of carbon fiber instead.

Yes, I wouldn't paint my laptop because of resell value. I would only paint it something simple if I were too. I like the carbon fiber idea! It seems more practical.

Oh common, where is your sense of adventure, just spray it. If you fail get a new set of plastics. You guys are probably doing just the lid for crying out loud.

:D Haha. I like you style ;) FINE, if I get around to finding some time during my uber busy student life, then I may paint the lid of my laptop! If I fail, I'll buy another off eBay.

Get the lid off ebay and do it on that. Scratched up casings are cheap, i brought water damaged plastics and i'm spraying that set.

Stickers LOOKS CHEAP AND NASTY in my opinion.

I wouldnt apply anything so tacky on my Laptop.

Spray painting is easy and reaults are nice, make sure you google a few hours before doing it if you havent done it.

As was said previously, its just a lid.

Stickers, CHEAP. Paint, NICE & EASY.

You both make very good points, I'll get an old lid off eBay and test spray it, if it doesn't turn out too good, then, who cares!?

It was just sprung upon me then, I helped out one of the teachers at school, and he gave me an RM Williams Longhorn sticker, so, I stuck that on my laptop. Doesn't look half bad actually, better then I expected. These are only temp things, because IMO my laptop is pretty plain and boring. Needed something ASAP to spruce it up! Oh well, I'll keep researching and thinking whether painting is a good idea or not.

    Thanks for you help, BTW!

Some good carbon fiber film. Thinkin about doin it to my dm3t. Judging from the pics and videos there it seems to take contours very well.

Do they have a shiny version? black that shines like the plastic area of the motor bike? I think this would be good for my wrist pad area so i might consider getting some.

Thanks for the link, may come in handy for other people. But I'm in Australia, so US sites are no good to me :)

If I was to do it, I'd look into getting 3M. Not cheap though. :/
