Hi, im new to this forum and have joined because my laptop palm rest area is greying due to high usage.
i was wondering if i use vinyl sheets on the work area will i need to disconnect the display and components like when repainting.
i have the assembly instructions but dont really want to go through that,
also .. whats the best way to get started.. apply it on and then cut .. or measure and stuff..
i feel measuring wont work because it will need to be pin point accuracy to get it all aligned

Hi i have a compaq n800c with a similar problem. I got some computer paper and outlined the palm wrest with a marker. I cut it out as a template. I then lined it up to make sure it was perfect. I went to the autozone and purchased black carbon fiber vinyl. I unrolled the vinyl and placed my template on securing many areas with transparent tape and used scissors to cut it out until it looked like the template. I then applied the vinyl starting at the overhang when the grey show and afterwards cutting the excess vinyl and making sure of no air bubbles. You will alway wind up with 2-3 templates if you decide to change colors. I also did the top outer portiion freehand.

First you could try a vinyl dye like Krylon. This paint will molecularly bond to the palm rest. The problem will be matching the color you have if you are not repainting the whole notebook. If you are painting the whole notebook, the key is going to be the protective finish you put over the paint so it doesn't scratch. Don't skimp on the clear coat.
As for vinyl adhesive sheets to cover the palm rest. This will work and probably pretty well. There are several types, but I would get a 3mil adhesive backed vinyl, which usually comes in white. DEFINITELY measure and cut before hand. Use a pattern from a piece of paper and get it perfect, then transfer that pattern to your vinyl.
