My friend and I want to build a laptop simply for the experience of putting one together. Of course, we want to make this laptop pretty top-notch with SSD and 2nd gen i5 sandy bridge and such. We're looking for a good website to order a whitebook/barebone, so we could start ordering components based on it. What website would let us customize the motherboard to fit our specifications?

there are no moderen companies that do this sort of thing anymore.. companies such as asus, msi, and sager etc go through other channels to sell there barebones such as xoticpc.com

Check out RJTech.com they allow you to buy a barebone laptop with choice of video card.

AVADirect also sells barebones, although their barebones right now are limited to socket G1/first generation i-cores. You could try asking them if they'd be willing to sell one of their pre-configured models as parts, but I don't know if they'd be willing to do that.

It could also be worth search through various places incl. ebay for left-overs from OCZ.
They used to have Wide range of White books and DIY laptops!
EOL Notebook Systems OCZ Technology
