The best upgrade for gaming is always to choose better graphic card.
Can u install 2 hard drives f.e. one hdd and second SSD? If were u I would upgrade memory up to 8GB and install SSD (for windows and applications) as 1st drive (HDD as 2nd). Of course if its possible :)
If I had to choose one of those, I would choose SSD.

In order, for that particular machine: GPU (your machine can take 7970m upgrade, which will probably quintuple your graphical performance), CPU (the i5-430m is devilishly slow. At least try for a i7-740qm or a i7-820qm, but go for i7-920xm if you can. You can't imagine how much it will improve performance and PC response. I did the upgrade from 460m to 920xm and couldn't believe it), RAM (RAM IS CHEAP. You can use a maximum of 8GB DDR3-1333 with an i7 cpu), SSD.

The SSD is a big investment and will only speed up load times and reduce some incidents of stuttering, but it pales in comparison to the performance upgrade for the other components. For the price of a SSD you can upgrade the CPU and RAM.

With the full upgrade path available to you (920-940xm CPU, 7970m GPU, 8GB DDR3) your machine could comfortabily last another 2 years of high-end gaming.

Definitely upgrade your CPU and GPU first if you're looking to game harder, but if you're just looking for a cheap performance boost grab the most RAM you can and shove in your PC. SSD should be your last priority, a 7200rpm will handle games fine.

RAM? Minimally considering you already have 4GB. They'll make your OS snappier though.

Your GPU is most likely the bottleneck for gaming, I would say either get a SSD for general computer snappyness or upgrade your GPU? otherwise just save the money you would spend on a decent gpu for a new laptop. Although I think a HD 7970 is the best increase for gaming out of your options.

Upgrade your GPU. Yes, the slow CPU will bottleneck the GPU's performance a bit, but you will definitely be able to game pretty smoothly. As others have said, a 7970M is a good choice.

What games do you play? I know games like Battlefield 3 are CPU intensive, so if you play those types of games, a CPU upgrade makes sense.
