I have an old dell inspiron that I'd like to transform in to a network media player.

Is there a way to remove but still use a laptop screen via the laptop? I plan on building a custom cabinet to hold the screen to hide the "guts" where it would normally connect to the laptop body, and the laptop itself would only be a few feet away.

So far when researching this, I've only come up with tutorials about how to removed a laptop screen for replacement (destructive) or to remove and use with a desktop (vga -> pannellink issues etc)

Any ideas? Is there a standard cable for power and video, or are these proprietary across manufacturers?

To my knowledge laptop LCDs work differently than lets say a regular LCD. Because when my brother got his laptop screen replaced certain models won't even work if you plug it in due to power management and motherboard requirements. So it might be difficult to make it work.

They are propreitery IIRC, but you may have some luck just extending the cable (time consuming) if you look at some laptop to digital photoframe guides they extend the cables so they can flip the screen around (i think makezine has some)

If you've good with a pair of wire cutters, you can try cutting the LCD cable and extending it. I would use an ethernet cable as a donor for wire because those have 8 smaller wires inside them.
