It looks like the cheapo laptop wars for the holiday season is starting early. Best Buy is advertising a Gateway 15.4" Intel Celeron based laptop for $299 and the sale starts tomorrow. No rebates needed, it's all instant savings.

Below is an ad scan of the advertisement appearing in newspaper circulars promoting this deal:

Notice that there will only be 10 per store, and only one can be purchased by a household. The specs for the Gateway ML6230 being sold are as follows:

• Intel Celeron M Processor 520 1.6GHz
• Screen: 15.4" WXGA
• Memory: 512MB
• Storage: 80GB Hard Drive
• DVD Burner
• 4-in--1 Media Card Reader
• 1yr warranty
• Wireless 802.11b/g
• Ports: S-video, Firewire ports, 4 USB ports, Headphones, Microphone, Ethernet
• OS: Vista Home Basic

Unfortunately, the price will vary somewhat by location. According to posters on FatWallet, New York and California are the only places certain to have the $299 deal at the moment, it's $349.99 in many other places. Check your Sunday morning newspaper to see what the price will be in your area.

Since there's limited availability for the Gateway laptop at Best Buy, it might be hard to score this deal. The laptop will also be pretty crippled with only 512MB of memory and a Celeron processor, so here's some other good deals going on at the moment if this Gateway doesn't seem to be up to the job:

I might just pick up that Gateway for my parents and surprise them with it next weekend when I go home. Stick the 1GB of memory that originally shipped with my laptop and set up a Linux dual-boot. Seems pretty good to me.

Those are some outstanding deals, it is too tempting to simply pick up another machine. Great post.

That gateway is quickly obsolete, vista with that specs sucks.

That Gateway may not be bad. I could pick it up for my mother, and take my VAIO back. Though, whether it would hold up for another year is a pretty major question...

HP coupon code NB3025 is no longer valid as was mentioned yesterday in the HP forum. Just tried it on my account to be sure, and it is indeed deactivated.

Just an FYI, the Gateway is actually $349 in most states, and it doesn't have a DVD-RW, just DVD-ROM combo drive. There is a Toshiba laptop with a DVD-RW drive and a bit faster processor for $399 though.

Yep, its $349 in Washington. I think the $299 is only in California or something like that.
