Looks like 10 inches will be the standard for most netbooks.

That's actually kind of cool. The 9" keyboards are too tiny anyway (except for the 9" models that are basically 10" models with a smaller screen...if that makes sense and I understand it right).

yea the 8.9 inch model pretty much had a 10 inch chassis with a 9 inch screen anyway. there will still be others around like the acer aspire 1 anyway. no big loss.

To you, but some people like the size. The main thing is it is basically a 7" EEE with a 9" screen built in (as in the 7" EEE's are the same size as the 9" ones). If Asus can find a way to make its 10" machines smaller, than I will be fine.

i honestly welcome 10 - 12" i think that will be the standard and this should be a welcoming for the ion platform to come in,

I like the size of my Acer, perfect for what a netbook is for. When I think about 10in netbooks I cant help but say to myself "might as well go for a 12in". Just my $.02.

It's really hard for anyone to compete with Acer on the 8.9" spectrum anyway, so I don't blame them.

If they manage to make their future 10 inchers smaller it's fine, otherwise the size difference is noticeable and their move is bad. There are customers who want REALLY small netbooks. Most of the 10 inchers are beasts compared to the old 7 or 9inch Eeepcs.

I have to agree, 10" EEE's are just to big. The HP mini is a right sized 10". Very compact and a very nice keyboard. The hinge design and extra bezel around the screen just make it to large for what it is.

Acer Aspire One 8.9" has the chassis of a 10" netbook.

    AAO: 9.8" x 6.7" x 1.1"

    Lenovo S10: 9.8" x 7.2" x 1.2"

    MSI Wind: 10.23" x 7.08" x 1.24"

    Dell Mini 12: 11.77" x 9.02" x 1.09"

    Samsung NC20: 11.51" x 8.54" x 1.2"

    This is insane.

It would be funny if the netbook ended up defeating it's own purpose, and all netbooks just became 12 inch laptops with above average battery life, as they make them bigger and add more features.

They're not meant to be 100% comfortable to use from the get go, it's a compromise. Just because the 7" models were too small doesn't mean they need to be even bigger. The NC20 is nuts.

I love the teeny tiny size of the EEE PCs. I'll probably get one of those. When i have more money down the road, I might consider a 10" one but it's silly having 3 laptops for different levels of portability. I'll just lug around my big big laptop if I need that big a screen. I probably won't be writing any books or essays on the EEE PC. Well maybe I will, but I'll be fixing it up on a proper keyboard.

The me it's not an EEE PC if it's more than 8.9". Or rather it's a blown up EEE PC, for people undesicive whether they want a small laptop or netbook, which has no meaning if normal EEE PCs don't exist.

Smallest of the pack, plus you forgot HPs 8.9 model that has the following specs:
    10.30" x 6.56" x 0.99"

Not to mention the asus 10" model:
    10.47" x 7.53" x 1.12-1.5"

It may be slight, but the Acer is smaller and packs ALOT under the hood. When comparing a 10 to a 12in there isnt enough difference for me to take a atom CPU over a full blown mobile CPU. But when it comes to a 8.9 screen that is considerably smaller (~37% smaller ) then the Asus 10in version it makes it more appealing and worthy of an Atom CPU to me. But then again it is all personal preference.

Pretty nice dimensions on the Samsung NC10:

    10.27 x 7.3 x 1.19" @ 2.8 lbs.

The 8.9" HP is also a 10" chassis.

    An example of a true 8.9" chassis would be an ASUS EEE 901: 6.87" x 8.87" x 1.63".

There's significantly less difference in size when comparing a 8.9" to a 10" chassis than there is when comparing a 10" chassis to a 12" chassis. Fact is the difference in size between an 8.9" and a 10" is usually based on the keyboard size not the screen size.

I will give you though that there is no point in going for a 12" netbook when for less than $150 more you can get a 13" notebook with better specs.

    Dell Inspirion 13: 12.51" x 9.37" x 1-1.51" starting at $599

    Lenovo Thinkpad SL300: 12.5" x 9.4" x 1.3-1.5" starting at $649 ($789 with a discrete 9300M)
