[IMG]The team at NotebookReview.com just finished our in-depth look at the latest generation of AMD's "Accelerated Processing Unit" (APU) technology. Code named "Trinity" this complex processor combines a central processing unit (CPU) and a graphics processor (GPU) onto a single chip while promising lower power consumption. Keep reading to see if your next laptop should have AMD inside.

God, I would love to have an AMD branded laptop, though I know that's just for reviews. Please oh please AMD, make a limited run of those laptops.
Here's some more cool looking pics from Anandtech. AnandTech - Gallery - AMD Trinity Prototype Laptop - 10 Photos
I don't know about you, but that's a cool looking prototype. I love the big AMD logo on the top of the lid. :D

I think it's just a rebranded last-generation Dell Vostro chassis, or something of the sort.

EDIT: Just read the article; indeed it is ;)

Nice review, now if only we can see the A10 in 11"-13" form factor with backlit keyboard or at least with the A6 in a smaller size other than 15"-17" laptops we usually see with the top tier APU's.
These would be perfect for small but powerful laptops with thin chasis and decent battery life that can do everyday dasks with ease but be able to play most recent games at low to medium settings when you get the urge.

There's a market out there for high-quality thin-and-light laptops packing an APU rather than Ivy Bridge and a dGPU. Unfortunately, there's no supply to meet the demand. The Envy 4z will be a near-miss as it's apparently going to forego the dGPU of the 4t, but 1366x768 is a travesty. Maybe when Trinity laptops start landing en masse...

for me the magic chip in that lot is the 25W A10 with 384 shaders.

should be able to shoe-horn that into an 11.6" chassis, now who will provide me one?

i will accept a thin-light thin-bezel 13" screen from HP or Lenovo if it comes with the A10-4655M

Nice review Jerry, Trinity shines better and better! If you still have this laptop couldn't you take it apart and try that A10-4600M in older Llano laptops? Some of them already have new bios like the Vostro 3555 and really curious will work or not?

I would have to take a look at the legal paperwork before I go as far as removing the processor in this system. AMD loaned these prototype systems to tech journalists only after we agreed to sign a pretty specific loan agreement. I suspect there is language in there to prevent people from completely removing the APU and dropping it into another notebook, but if not, that's certainly something we would consider trying.

The significantly decreased clockspeed in the 4655M's GPU, and the less-than-expected GPU increase over Llano, make me think I'd be a bit underwhelmed by it...

That would be great, because I'm afraid will take lot longer to find an A10-4600M APU to buy and try by customers. To get a good working A8-3550MX took 9 months after purchasing my Vostro.
Meanwhile I would not wish you any trouble, if there is a regulation to take it apart, so take good care of those agreement.

I read in another review that they use different sockets.

    That's for desktops.

There's no mention of compatibility between mobile Trinity and and FS1r1. Considering that the preview units use the same A60 and A70 chipsets, the difference would have to be the socket itself, and Trinity looks to have the same pin layout as Llano.

Of course, laptops probably will still require a BIOS update to support Trinity, if Trinity is even compatible, which would be unlikely unless the manufacturer has really good support for their products.

I am personally quite impressed with Trinity.

If I decide to get a new laptop this year it will most definitely be a Trinity based laptop.

The gains in battery life outshine the missing (expected) graphics performance. Looking forward to the probooks with this chips. 13" inch if posible.

I'd put money that we're going to see every single variant possible.

Stick a 1600x900 14" or 13" laptop with trinity for dirt cheap and I'm in. Call it a day.

That is the spec I am looking for as well. I just hope we see some notebooks in that size with a top of the line Trinity and not one of the really cut down chips.
