The Eee PC 1001P SeaShell is ASUS's new entry-level netbook offering the Intel Atom N450 processor and Intel GMA 3150 integrated graphics. Designed closely after its higher-class brother, the 1005PE, the 1001P offers many of the same features, minus the Chiclet-style keyboard, larger battery, and larger hard drive. In this review, we see how the 1001P stacks up against other netbooks and if it holds a candle to the more expensive 1005PE.

It is kinda weird how in the review the text changes size...

But it looks like a good cheap netbook. Windows starter is the killer though.

Odd code blip inserted some text size info into the admin... fixed it so it should be a consistent font size.

Starter is an odd beast but I think its still better than XP Home ;)

Hmm...I thought Starter cannot change the background picture.

There really isn't anything wrong with starter.

I would pay the extra for the bigger HDD and N wireless.

Oh by the way, in the review he states why this is. Asus is kind enough to include software that lets you circumvent this nasty issue. It sounds like you can then use whatever wallpaper you wish. :)

The previous model (1005PE) is about 60 bucks more and has a larger battery. That is where the difference in battery life comes from.

Could you test the VGA? Some reviews of the other models say it only puts out higher than its own native res in certain modes.

What resolutions are you curious about? To benchmark the system we had to connect it to an external monitor and at least 1280x1024 and 1024x768 worked.

This was in one of the reviews I read.

I don't know what to think of it.

Maybe there is a clash in terminology but generally speaking when you mirror a screen it is locked to the lowest resolution.

Regarding the screen brightness... how bad is it actually? Could you compare it to an older iBook G4?

What about the eeeCtl tool? Can it be used on this model to adjust screen brightness?

I really like everything about the 1001P, but I'm not sure about the dim screen.

eeeCTL stopped working after the switch to PineTrail processors (the N450/455/etc) as far as I know.

The 1001P display brightness (at max) was about 125 nits, which isn't very high, but it wasn't something that detracted from the usage of the system. The 1001P had an awesome contrast ratio though, it was something like 840:1, so the screen is definitely a plus point. I'd take the higher contrast ratio over a higher brightness, lower quality panel any day. Asus is mainly just limiting brightness through the software so that they can have higher battery life numbers.

Thanks. So since the screen brightness is limited only by software, maybe someone somewhere is working on a hack for that...

I knew this was happening, because on occasion my display halts, recovers, and I get a message that my "display driver stopped working and has been recovered." The recovered screen is dramatically brighter than it could ever achieve on max brightness under normal conditions. At this point, if I adjust the brightness, this max brightness reverts to what was possible before the display driver reset.
