You forgot to mention that you get a full year of Accidental Damage protection with two-way shipping... That's gotta be worth something... With regard to gaming: Far Cry 2 at the lowest settings runs just fine IMHO and Spore plays great, I don't think that this should be considered a gaming machine but it is not crippled in this regard like all of ther netbooks out there. I think that the killer app for this is the MPC HC 1080p playback, it really seals the deal. I appreciate the fact that you corrected yourself but then you mentioned that "it has some hiccups when running off the battery". I haven't experienced those hiccups, can you please clarify? Bottom Line: If you want a very portable laptop that is small but feels like a real computer and not a toy and you like to play the occasional game and your expectations for gaming on it are not astronomical, then the N10J is for you...

The hiccups were playing the 1080p trailer I was testing out on battery life where it started to get the video and audio out of sync trying to keep up with decoding. Better than before, but might have been pushing it.

Isn't the Atom's CPU performance equivalent to the first generation Pentium M? That's pretty slow now of days! The Geforce 9300m is actually a decent card. It's very similar to Geforce 9400m which is in the new Apple Macbook, except for the lower clock speeds. This is the lead paragraph from notebookcheck on the 9300:

"Enhanced 8400M GS chip, which is manufactured in 65nm and shows slightly better performance due to a few minor optimizations. The technical data correspond to the 8400M GS chip. "

Not bad, considering the 8400m gs (what the Dell m1330 uses) is considered a dedicated notebook graphics card (albeit a year old).

you guys should try fallout 3 ...
    at 2.0ghz...
it is even playable at med to high setting..
i tweaked my setting so i can even use AA and AF...
    comeon.. try it!!!!

The only think i want to add to this netbook is a bigger battery...
can someone really confirm... This N10J use the same battery as the U3 series?

I would like to know how Fallout 3 plays on the GMA950... but that's pretty impressive if you can even play on Medium with AA on the 9300GS

i doubt the gma 950 will even run fallout 3
as it is not even directx 9 chip..
not even have hardward T n L, no hardware shaders

from what i read... the x1600 pro is the bare bare minimum card for thsi game..
and GMA 950 is even worse then the ati radeon 9800 pro...
i say... no chance.. to run this game

All intel integrated gfx does not work on FO3 (not even the X4500), but they do work on Oblivion.

If it's the hardware TnL then I think there is a program to emulate that... i haven't used it though since I haven't had a laptop with a GMA 950 for a while now...

FO3 requires SM2.0b+ shader as minimum, GMA950 only got SM2.0 so it won't work, X4500 may have potential but unless Intel work their driver out it can't run FO3 for now

I just bought the N10J-A1 from NCIXUS for $632, and it's since dropped to $617.50. The shipping and insurance added another $34.

I have some N10 questions ... 99% about to buy this:

    http://www.ow.com.au/ASUS-N10JC-HV00...H-Notebook-PC#

I have looked at the EEE1000H which has the 1.6Ghz Atom and it appears to be dual thread (in task manager).

    1. Is the N10 dual thread as well (looks like 2 cores in task manager)?

    2. When you switch between 9300 video to integrated video is their a bit of hoo-ha in the OS like lots of prompts and stuff...this is going to be used by my wife as well so just want to get an idea of the amount of "stuffing around" in going from dedicated to integrated...

Hoping it's a seamless transition - doesn't require reboots or anything.

    3. Does it have TPM as well as fingerprint reader? So I could test out bitlocker on it from Vista Ultimate?

    4. Can it run 64 bit OS?

    5. Going to 2GB - do I need 1 stick of 2GB or another 1 stick of 1GB (ie are their 2 RAM slots or 1)

    6. Express Gate is one of the big selling factors for me...as web(email), skype and messaging will be awesome to have at "8 secs" boot....do you guys use Express Gate? Is it good? Is battery life very good if you just run in Express Gate?

    Thanks!!!!!

    Yes, it is hyperthreaded CPU.
No, it cannot run 64bit OS, no EMT64 in CPU.
1 slot for memory, buy a single 2GB SODIMM.
N10Jc has TPM, not sure if the other models have it.

Well I bought it today. It's just an awesome little thing to behold. To be honest a little thicker than I thought it would be but too good to pass up on. I bought it with an external DVD drive as well...just in case I wanna watch a movie or install something. So far it's flawless.

Does anybody know if you can use the HDMI out and VGA out at the same time as the primary laptop display? In essence, I would have three displays running simultaneously.

I wouldn't be using GPU-intensive apps; I would just want to display web pages, excel spreadsheets, etc. If so, this would make a great ultra-light and portable business machine for me.

If not, if anyone can suggest another laptop model in the same price range (700ish) that can do this, I would certainly appreciate it!

I really need help from you guys.

My dad bought one N10J and he want the smaller battery, 3-cell, he hates the 6-cell because it pops out of the case. It doesn't matter to him that it's half the time.

But I can't find the 3-cell battery anywhere, could you guys help me?

    Best Regards,

    Abras

The price is a tad to expensive for a laptop like that. I rather go buy a 600$ 15.4" laptop at dell and it will preform faster.

from the looks of it, it is reminiscenent to Asus S101, except maybe for the Swarovski accentuation.

but my question is, how about the build quality on this. is this hard plastic? or aluminum.

how is this compared to the buidl quality of asus S1014. or HP Mini 5101.

Excuse my ignorance but I would like to know if the HDMI is just for output or can it be used for input too? My user manual says I can connect it to a set top box (common in Australia) or a dvd player. Can I connect my N10JC to either of these machines or a pvr and watch tv on my computer?
