<!-- Generated by XStandard version 1.7.1.0 on 2007-04-10T13:53:58 -->Dell and Alienware, partners in crime in the PC industry, are now offering a half terabyte of storage in their Dell XPS M2010 and Alienware Aurora m9700 giant sized notebook offerings. This is the first time 500GB of storage has been offered in a notebook form factor via the configuration of two 250GB hard drives.
The XPS M2010 is a 20" screen foldable notebook from Dell while the Alienware Aurora m9700 is a 17" screen dual graphics, dual hard drive offering from Alienware. Both notebooks are quite obviously desktop replacement style systems, with various gaming and multimedia features, that can be moved when necessary (do not use them in your lap).
The Alienware configuration page for the Aurora m9700 shows you can now select 2 x 250GB hard drives (view large image)Both systems will be offered with a 250GB hard drive solution available in dual configurations where each hard drive has the following specs:
- 250GB capacity
- 5400 RPM spin
- 1.5Gb/s (SATA) transfer rate
The Dell XPS M2010 can now be configured with 500GB of storage space (view larger)
While some of us still have space on our 60GB hard drive (me), other people that deal with extremely large video files, photo files, or massive collections of MP3s and iTunes can hoard hard drive space and the idea of more internal storage rather than dealing with external drives can be hugely appealing. Here are some examples of what 500GB will translate to storing in real terms:
- 200 hours of DVD-quality video (2.25GB/hr)
- 60 hours of HD video (8.3GB/hr)
- 38 hours of digital MPEG video (13GB/hr)
- 120,000 songs (4MB for 4 minute average songs)
- 140,000 photo images (2.5MB / 6 Megapixel image)
Plus, how cool is it to say that your notebook has half a terabyte of storage?

most top end Aliens are in the 12-15lb range... so great!!!... Now they will make laptops for Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Id rather a 500gig external if i really need to store that much data.
500g in a laptop is really silly and it sounds like its just the same ol mentality of why do it... just to say it can be done -

Forget 500gb and work out how to carry those laptops around! 3 pairs of trousers needed to protect your nether regions from the heat!
Seriously, with 500gb I could probably just about fit my DVD film collection uncompressed onto it. Maybe. I have a lot of DVDs -
In case of XPS we are talking $6000 here ... ;-)

LOL. I was going to get either two 200gb 7200rpm or two 250gb 5400rpm for my notebook when they were available. I need more room since I RAID-1 on my notebook.
This isnt too much of news, I think that it was said that Hitachi was going to release these 250gb drives weeks ago. -
I didnt know they made 2.5" drives that large

Andrew,
You can pretty announce the Clevo D900C can have a whopping 750GB storage (w/ 3 internal 2500gb HDD).
That would pretty much put the Dell XPS monstrosity in its place.
Clevo D900C still remains king [even though its not out yet]. -

I'd personally get a smaller laptop with a mid-size hard drive (the 160GB 5400RPM is an excellent value right now) and then a large external one.
500GB in a notebook . . . imagine what we would have thought of that 4 or 5 years ago. -
I'm not even sure if people would have thought of 500GB in desktops 4-5 years ago.

I have 2 external harddrives (technically, it's only one. my second HDD-case broke, so now i have an extra 3,5" HDD), and together with my internal one that makes up 480GB, and i have to make a conscious effort not to fill them up. Right now i actually have quite a bit of free space, but that's because i needed to back up my lappy harddrive (i migrated to vista). I tend to keep stuff (my anime and manga collection was huuuge at one point) and my music collection takes up 40GB of my laptop hdd (plus the backup of the collection on of my external ones, cause i ain't losing that again), and that's AFTER I imposed a limit on it (otherwise I couldn't have installed many things or kept the files i have right now). I don't really enjoy bringing the externals with me, so a bigger internal HDD would be awsome.

Whenever I see the dell XPS M2010 I always wonder who are the people that are buying these leviathans, that isn't a notebook that is a portable desktop
.
I would rather have a nice normal notebook with one of the 160Gb internal harddrives as said by many here than one of those "things" -
I'm just wondering
Does anyone on this forum have a XPS M2010? I had no idea that was a laptop until now. -

Well Im interested in buying one of these hitachis.
The orignal msrp of the seagate 160 gb 7200 rpm was 300 but right now all over theres the price set at 180$ taking orders for 2 weeks from now. Dell was the first to get those as well
It stands to reason that a 250 gb 5400 rpm hd might be around the same price or maybe slightly more once they reach production. Id rather have the 250 gb obviously
