the thing i just LOVE about SSD vs HD is that SSDs can survive way more punishment. if ever i can wave the eee around like a flag and nothing will go wrong unlike a laptop which you have to be extra careful with

I'm thinking about getting the 8.9" Eee, but April is too far away. I would have bought one if it was available now.
Anyone considering the Eee would do well to wait for more details on the HP 2133 (the design is much better than the Eee and the rumored $630 price is close to the Eee's rumored price too) and the other Atom-based subnotes due in April. -
Do we have any details on the chipset and processor? I hear it will be using the same as its predecessor?
-
Looks like the 1024x600 resolution is official now.
Brief Engadget report + pics from CeBIT here -
OMG! I just saw the Engadget pics from CeBit! Seeing that thing running Windows XP at 1024 resolution! Its perfect, and sooooooooooo tiny! I was thinking of having a nice little Sony TZ, but for word documents, and internet browsing/email, this little machine is even smaller, and less expensive to take with you on a trip without worrying about losing it...

So how much extra is the 6 year old OS(XP)? Why, why, why??? Regardless this is pretty damn cool.

This vs a HP IPAQ 210...

This thing looks excellent, man I really wish I would have waited before buying my notebook, This would have been perfect for me in college, plus I would have saved a ton of $$$!

I just bought a 4G, but this new one looks interesting. Already have a interested buyer for my 4 day old 4G (bought one day just before the announcement) so I might just sell it. Demand here is still outstripping suppy.
But then again, the 4G despite its limitation of resolution (CPU even when underclocked to 600mhz and storage is not a problem, this being a "travel" laptop), it still holds a sweet spot in pricing that no one can match (maybe save the upcoming cloudbook).
The 8.9" EEE might just end up pricing itself precariously close to budget 12.1 inch notebooks, which offer quite a lot more computer for not much more $ compared to the EEE.
If Asus prices this more than US$500 (Xp versions will probably be more), its going to be a tough sell, since you can get a basic Vostro 1200 for not much more.
The is definately demand for these small full function UMPCs, and I'm evaluating deploying some limited units for our staff (which despite looking a bit "toylike", is very well received - especially with our female sales staff). Now with European carry-on luggage limit at 7kg (or was it 8), its difficult to lug a full size laptop on-board. -
You could have a desktop and Eee though, for not much more than a nice laptop. -
The EEE is very useful. Its like a mini notebook. My dad has one for which he takes to small meetings and so on, instead of lagging around his big PRecision M90

Urgh... Here is another potential eee category laptop.. (do we have a specific name for it? Super Ultra Compact Portable?). It's from ECS (bet lots of you never heard of it).

We will be seeing many subnotebooks, ultraportables and UMPCs coming out this year, several of them being EEE competitors. But of course, I only care for the ones that will come to the U.S.
Several of the ones being shown in CEBIT and elsewhere probably will never reach us, like that ECS G10IL. -
If there is sufficient demand, there will be a way, whether its Dynamism, ebay, or some other enterprising entrepreneur.
-
ECS doesn't usually brand thier own products. Perhaps it will end up branded into something else.
Now, Dell UMPC/Axim? Hinge design looks suspiciously like my M1330 don't it? I'm just guessing.....its certainly a possibility. Would be a welcomed addition though. The more the merrier. -

Some benchmarks had put the Atom at a slight disadvantage compared to the Celeron 900 in the EEE on single thread apps. Seriously for something this small, I would think you might be fine with a single thread CPU. My old Sonoma 740 is still good for 90% of the stuff I do. My T7100 M1330 and T7300 D630 don't really feel a lot faster. In fact on some tasks the EEE 4G works faster due to the SSD.
We will have to see how much battery life the Atom will help. The MSI Wind is interesting with its suposely 7 hour battery life.
The other issue that still swings to the EEE's favour is its simple and robust looks. Rough it may be, but I have an feeling it can take more abuse (ahem, real world use) than the offerings from HP, MSI, ECS.... -

Now, will the Wind or any of the computers shown at CEBIT (a German show) actually reach us here in the U.S?
Seems most (if not all) of them will be Europe/Asia only. : /
