It seems Asus has finally caved on the higher priced EEE PC Lineup, reducing the cost of the older 16GB Linux equipped EEE 900 to $399, and the Windows XP version for $449. While these aren't exactly Intel Atom units at reasonable prices, it is nice to see the price coming down. Currently the $399 Linux version is being offered only in white, with the $449 Windows XP model being offered in black.
(view large image)Both Windows XP and Linux models come with the same specifications:
- Intel Celeron M ULV 900MHz processor
- Integrated Intel GMA 900 GPU
- 12GB of Flash-based storage (4GB onboard SSD and 8GB PCI-E mini card SSD)
- 1GB of DDR2 RAM (667MHz)
- Windows XP operating system
- 8.9-inch screen with 1024 x 600 resolution
- Ports: 3 USB 2.0, 1 VGA monitor out, headphone jack, microphone input, SD card reader (SDHC compatible), Kensington lock slot, Ethernet 10/100
- Webcam (1.3 MP)
- Battery: 4-cell 5800 mAh 7.2V Li-Ion (rated at 3.5 hours)
- Wireless: 802.11b/g Atheros
- Input: Keyboard and Multi-touch touchpad
- Dimensions: 22.5cm(W) x 17cm(D) x 2cm~3.4cm(H)
- Weight: approximately 2.2 lbs with battery, 2.8 lbs travel weight with AC adapter.
- One-year warranty
These prices are confirmed on Newegg right now, both models in stock. While we don't see any pricecuts on the older, smaller, EEE PC 701 just yet, I don't think anyone in their right mind would be buying one of those with the upgraded model going for the same price. I really wouldn't be surprised to see $100 bucks slashed off the tag of the older model, and maybe even the 2G surf going for the originally hoped for $199 pricemark.
Though these prices only seem to be in effect in the U.S., all is not lost for our Canadian friends either. The Canadian online retailer NCIX is offering $100 in rebates on all Eee 900 models.

About time, for a minute there I was wondering just what happened to the "ultra low cost" part of ULCPCs
-
ahhh.... Capitalism and competition at it's finest.
I'm still looking into buying a 9/10in atom laptop in the future, so I am very happy about all the models that are competing for my money. =D -
I'll get one when they come with a better GPU, so I can play Spore on one
-
Great price for the Linux version, too bad it couldn't be the 20GB one. As for Windows...har har!

Huh... well now if they could only get it together on their current models they would actually be in the competition. LOL
Why would I buy an Eee 900 when I could get an Atom based Dell E or MSI Wind for that same priceoint??
Asus really has lost its edge... -
Hm... Spend my $399 on a older slower EEEPC or on a shiny new AspireOne or Wind... Decisions decisions...
-
Still is too expensive, the MSI Wind with the 1.6GHz Atom CPU and an 80GB hard drive comes in at $399 (Linux model), and both the Aspire One and Inspiron E start at well under $400.
-
Why do they even bother making those old models anymore? -
Wind sounds great! If you order it now you might have it by Sept!
-
-
Because the lag time in announcing a laptop and actually selling them is about a year. So they have already built these laptops and it's too late for them to back out of their commitment. So they WANT to sell them, and they probably won't make many more after the initial batch is sold out.

Asus needs to simplify their Eee line. It is getting a bit ridiculous, check out the chart at the bottom.

still pricey. they should price it at $150

LOL! I think they are getting a little ahead of themselves no? -
Saw that coming from a mile away when they decided to start branding them as "EEEPC" instead "Asus".
