    Nice, lengthy review! Thanks!

Once again, users complain of Asus speakers. They really should address this issue, although I guess no one expects great quality speakers from a notebook, it should still be better than it currently is.

Nice to know that the 3D Marks haven't really dropped in Vista compared to XP.

    Hope you enjoy your V1J!

Wow, a nice and thorough review here. I especially like the comparison benchmarks for Vista / XP. Those PCMark05 scores are quite different and it makes you wonder if there's some gains being squeezed out there -- more than likely it's because you have a clean Vista install and none of the pre-loaded Asus software on there in such a case. I really like the fact Asus includes accessories with all of their notebooks, it really helps to differentiate them from other sellers.

Very nice review. This would be my perfect notebook, if the vent wasn't on the right side and the ctrl key was all the way on the left.

There is something i read that goph showed that ati cards run the same in vista but nvidia cards do not.

My card runs games slower in vista, somewhere in the 5-10% range.

3dmark 06 will not run at all in vista for me to test so its my estimate.

Nice review and glad to see it comes with docking station. I really need serial port for controlling microcontroller.

That's an excellent review and a beautiful notebook. The design of the V1JP looks very high-end, which would be a selling point for me. Nice specifications on that too.

Nice review. I was curious as to if you got a performance increase when playing Oblivion or WoW in Vista.

Thanks for the review. I thought long and hard between the G1 and V1. My biggest deciding factor is that I sit in my chair with my legs folded the majority of the time I use the computer and the right vent just doesn't work for me.

Just a note that someone else commented that the touchpad buttons become easier to use after a couple weeks.

This is why I'm actually not a very big fan of this review.

Neither vendor's cards perform the same in Vista as they do in XP. In many games, they take a fat dive, usually 10% at least. Of course, nVidia does have worse performance problems. But applications in general, beyond games, take a hit in Vista.

While oftentimes it's a negligible hit, the fact is that it IS there.

But just running 3DMark06 and then proclaiming "it's just fine!" is really disingenuous.

Great review! I was pretty surprised to see benchmark scores not going down in vista.

Unfortunately I did not benchmark the games separately in the two operating systems. I can provide settings and FPS under Vista, but I think I will not go back to XP, so I cannot report exact FPSes there.

    Define normal! :)

There are just many variants that are being sold around the world in different regions. If you compare this model to the one that was reviewed by MysticGolem then the main difference is the 2Gb of RAM instead of 1Gb and the 160Gb hard drive instead of the 120Gb one + the fact that a docking station is included.

I wonder how they decide on the variants? It does feel a little bit strange that ASUS would not market the same notebook everywhere, rather they make these small changes.
