Wow that thing is simply beautiful I love the high gloss look of that machine, I sure wish I could afford one, My laptop is like the Yugo of 17 inchers.

Awesome review as usual Chaz. I must admit that the Z84Jp is one of the systems I really like. It offers so much and is really well-priced. Hearing about the excellent screen and ports are like bonuses. When I first started seeing more pictures of it though, I have to admit it wasn't as pretty as I had originally thought it would be.
I remember you mentioned that PortableOne will be offering the go 7950 GTX in their version of this system, the WX. If that actually happens, this system will truly be a force to be reckoned with I think. -
Mmmmmm nice. Is it your new baby Chazster?
Can i have the sager? -
Well done Chaz!
8.8lbs is VERY heavy though! And those 3dmark05 scores are crazy low! Did they underclock it? I would have expected scores of 3800-4000 stock. -

I have an 18-month old W2v. From the pictures it looks like the vertical viewing angle is much improved on this model. Does anyone know what kind of panel it is? Could it really be something other than Tn??

Nice review Chaz, love the benchmark comparisons of XP versus Vista. Great points are made there about performance possibly not being up to par until drivers are all updated.
It's actually kind of odd to see an Asus notebook without the typical brushed aluminum look, so used to that. While it does look a little bland, the screen appears lovely in these pics. Wow what a reflector that palm wrist area is hey! That would get annoying having to clean.
Speakers that are good in a laptop? It's a cold day in you know where. -
Another fantastic review Chaz! Superb job!
I like the fit and finish of this notebook. I was disappointed about the lack of a separate number pad.
I may have missed this, but is there an option of dual hard drives? -

With the exception of the Go 7600 card (ideally, I'm looking for a Go 7900GTX or ATI equivalent), this unit is almost exactly what I'm looking for. Chaz mentioned that there are other products in this price range that do offer such cards. Could anyone offer some details regarding manufacturers and models so I can investigate further?
Thanks,
Steve -
I'm getting one of these to work on over the weekend -- I'm very glad Chaz seems pleased with it. I do plan on overclocking the video card, so I'll post and let you guys know the performance impact (on XP only, I don't have access to Vista atm).
Also, I got the chassis + parts for about $1530, why did yours cost so much more, Chaz? -
Wow that is a very respectable price. Too bad about the handicapped 7600. Great review!
they put in four speakers and a subwoofer!!!!!!!!!
I got to say I'm a gamer/audiophile and am very (unfortunately not interested) intrigued by this laptop.
1) Nothing short of $150 dollar headphones give you surround sound + a subwoofer. Even speakers for that matter.
2) Dual exhaust cooling system. Must allow for major overclocking potential (like 500/450 from 350/350 i'm guessing at that point it is a gaming machine).
3) Budget for the price. 7900/x1800 would have shot it to the $2200 dollar range which anyone will tell you is a market niche that nobody who likes to make money wants to fill.
This laptop is perfect for those who like bigger screens, great audio/entertainment capabilities, and medium-level gaming will not having to listen to the constant whir of the x1800xt/7900gtx series that drowns out computer speakers easily and is a major letdown in every way but graphically.
I seriously give this laptop 10/10 it's the best/most inventive i've seen in awile. -
Great review Chaz, it seems good Vista drivers are finally becoming available but I wonder why Asus is still putting in a semi-last generation geforce 7600 instead of a 7700 or even a 7900 for that matter?

Nice one CHaz.. which type of screen did you get? I have an LG screen.. the color is good but not the brightness.
I have to admit that the heat of this Z84j is really low when I put it on my lap. -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
), but in my opinion the screen was plenty bright. I'm sure we all have different opinions about brightness though; after all, most of us have different monitors so compared to those . .

Aparently the gpu is a type 3 mxm. Nobody verified it but ice tea said it might be.
There might be a user upgraded to x1900, or asus might offer it.
If thats true it is compatible with the gpus that are in the uniwill alienware 5500 5900 type machines -
I already talked to Ice tea about it. He saw the pictures and he said it'll be upgradeable. But I dont' have much knowledge to do such things so I'm not gonna try on my laptop. I'll wait till the warranty end I might go ahead and do it.
PS: Sad news.... I put my laptop on my backpack today to school... the laptop got scratch badly. I 'll never do it again T.T...
I'm looking for some kind of clear stickers that I can apply on the lid of this notebook. THe paint job is nice but it's not scratch resistant.
About Overclocking. The card runs very stable at the OC on my sig. THere is a little bit more heat.. otherwise the system runs great with out any problem.
