Last year HP offered the 11-inch Pavilion dm1z that offered "okay" performance and "acceptable" battery life if you weren't going to be away from a power outlet for too long. Here at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, HP is back with a vengeance and they're bringing along a little friend: the all new Pavilion dm1.

Thanks for the post Jerry. My head sunk when I read 'AMD'. Not really a big fan of them at all...but this is new technology.
What i'd like to know is which platform, Brazos/Zacate/Fusion or the new ULV Sandy Bridge processors from Intel would provide the most battery life...i'm very well interested in a second mobile option for when i'm on-the-road/travelling etc. and batt. life would be one of the most important features for me. -
Likewise, I too am definitely eyeing the new AMD Fusion tech. It's between the DM1, the S205, and the X120e that I am eyeing as my next "2nd" computer.
-
AMD has really come through. Atom is virtually, for now, defeated.

The thing I keep telling people who knock this Fusion tech is that you have to keep the price/performance point in mind. All the Brazos-based notebooks/netbooks we're seeing are less than $600 (most less than $450). At that price level it's tough to find an Intel offering that offers as good or better video performance and as good or better battery life.
Is the E-350 APU going to compete head-to-head with a Sandy Bridge Core i5 machine? No. But are you going to be able to purchase that Sandy Bridge laptop for $450? NO. -
Nice!
How will this compare against an ASUS 1215N with the Dual core ATOM and ION 2 chipset?
And when can we expect some low voltage SANDY BRIDGE netbooks?
Before I seen this beauty I was looking to get the ASUS but I'm not so sure right now. -
I've looked at the 1215N also... I would expect the Fusion to do better than that
... however I do not know about any ULV versions of the Sandy Bridge Core CPUs.
-
@ Jerry Jackson
If you or whoever reviews the DM1 can in anyway do a comparison with the ASUS 1215N or at least some ION 2 powered netbook.
It would be interesting to see how they stack up -

Excellent!
Cant wait to see the results, I know AMD will beat the ION 2 in battery life, but performance is where the big question is.
One more thing
THANKS! -
what touchpad is used?
is it one of the new synaptics multi-touch variants?
i love the E350 chip, and I like the new DM1 provided the six-cell sits flush with the chassis.
only shame is that it doesn't have at least one USB3 port. -
Also notice the only dm1z available on HP's site is with the 625 neo with 320GB HD for 524 dollars. Looks like they have used up all their K125 processors and K325 neos up. I'm starting to believe that the new model is right around the corner. Feel sorry for those that buy the older one this week. This looks to be a major refresh than a incremental progression. Hopefully the new DM1 will appear on HP's web site on Monday. Very tempted to pull the trigger early on this one. Incidentally, I think Levono is claiming 30% better battery life on their upcoming X120e. That would put it up to 5 maybe 6 hours battery life. And I am thinking these might be a more honest number then what HP and AMD are touting. I really like the X120e with its matte screen. The only thing I don't like are its down-firing speakers. HP usually has much better speakers. I can't decide but definitely will buy one of those two. -
Does anyone know if this will make its way to the UK market at all?
To the best of my knowledge the recently upgraded DM3 is still not available in UK -maybe it is not planned to appear at all- so I guess DM1 could have a similar fate... -
That looks good...but how does the AMD APU compare to Intel's ULV i7-2657M for ex. in reference to batt. life? The answer to this question is what I most likely would base my purchasing decision on. I await the reviews!
-
Besides battery life the SB look expensive. -
Forgot to add has there even been any announcement for SB netbooks at CES.
I've looked but nothing. -

However, I can't shake the feeling that Intel completely dropped the ball on the entry level/budget notebook and netbook segment ... forgetting that it's those budget systems that make up a huge percentage of total laptop sales worldwide.
Yes, everybody likes more power and faster processors. If you can afford to drop the cash on them they are great. That said, most average consumers just want a good HD video experience on their notebooks with a lightweight chassis and plenty of battery life at the LOWEST COST POSSIBLE.
We'll have to wait and see how future Fusion-based APUs perform (AMD plans to have their higher-performance standard voltage APUs ready sometime in 2011 and 2012). Those standard voltage APUs may or may not compete well against Sandy Bridge, but right now Intel left a HUGE opening for AMD and these low-voltage APUs are taking advantage of it. -
Just let everyone know this is on HP.COM. THE NEW DM1Z IS HERE!!
Just pulled the trigger. After applying 25 dollar coupon my total cost was $503.54

So unlike some web sites are reporting, this system is coming with 3 gigs of ram standard with BT. I was expecting to pay around 75 more for this setup. Not counting the norton I added for 29 dollars. So for 449 base you get the dual core with 3 gigs of ram and 320GB HD. HP has this priced right IMO. And its a better machine then the last generation for about the same money. Maybe a bit less considering the BT is now standard as well. -
Hmm...well you sure didn't let the smoke clear did you?
1366 x 768 BrightView Res. on the 11"incher is nice.
Would love if they threw in a backlit KB as well.
Not bad specs for the price at all though. Congrats on your purchase!Be sure to let us know the 'true' battery life figures.

I don't know, I am not too impressed by the price, compared to Thinkpads X200 that were available for ~$600-650 quite a few times recently. It looks to me like a regular ultraportable with a typical battery life for it's category.
I didn't like review. In particular "Excellent battery life" (err... try Asus netbooks...), "combines good graphics performance"... rofl? It's in line with Intel integrated graphics card performance. Who writes these reviews..... -
Try to find a better performing notebook for $549 new with the same battery life.
You can always say "If you put in $150 more you can get xxx" or "well yeah you can go on craigslist and find so and so for xxx" but the fact is there isn't anything that compares to these fusion budget ultraportable bang-for-buck. -
And for roughly the same price with a 1 hr batt life hit, you can get the 1215n, which is better for gaming. It really just depends what your needs are. -
-
Your thinking the 1215n is better for gaming? think again,
Benchmark Results: Graphics : AMD Fusion: Brazos Gets Previewed: Part 2, Performance
Like it or not, Intel does not have anything to compete on this price/performance level.. period. You want to spend bucks on an i7 etc... thats a different matter. You want something under 500 that runs cool, does 1080P, plays games then you better look at the fusion.
On the 11.6 form factor, AMD has literally leveled intel at this moment in time. Time will tell if the 9 watt fusions will do the same to the netbooks. I'm thinking they will, at least graphics wise. -
You can't be serious "will eat X200 graphic wise" ?! Dude, the graphics had 2k on 3DMark06. The only thing it eats is Minesweeper. It can barely play anything on low details. X200 has DisplayPort on Ultrabase. All of these GPUs are pretty much useless for anything that has utilizes 3D engine.
You compared this junk with Thinkpad keyboard ??? ROFLMAO! Seriously.... ROFL-MAO!
Uuu it has Norton!4 words: Microsoft. Security. Essentials. Free.
BTW, grats on your $500 piece of junk. ^^
I recently bought new X200 tablet for $650, which has roughly the same battery life. This laptop is a joke for this money. You CLEARLY haven't done ANY research if you think so. If you want REALLY good battery life, look at Asus, 10+ hrs. -
Based on that, no HDMI..which is mandatory for my needs. and that review shows it has Intel X4500 Integrated Graphics which is crap. Now the newer model that replaces the X200, the X201 is not even in the same class and has a i3/i5/ i7 retailing over 800 dollars. Even the top of the line x201 has integrated intel graphics. I'm sorry, the AMD 350 with radeon HD 6310 will clearly beat the integrated intel graphics. Now processor wise, yes, the i5/i7 clearly beats it out. But a X201 with those options will cost 2x + that of a dm1.
Now if you want to compare oranges to oranges, the new upcoming X120e will have the same AMD 350 APU. And as I said, I was considering that but decided to go with HP for other reasons, mainly for the superior built in speakers which is an important feature to me. I'm not understanding your comparison of the last generation X200 with intel graphics with a mono speaker. Its not in competition with what the dm1z can do. And if you think for one second the older X200 can game along with the new APU on the dm1z, I rather doubt it.
If you still don't believe me, here is the benchmarks, Intel is left literally in the dust: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-fusion-brazos-performance,2790-5.html
And if you still don't believe it, there are plenty of you tubes videos out there that show how intel graphics drop frames like crazy when gaming whereas the AMD apu is playing the same game smoothly with much higher frame rates. Eventually even AMD haters will have to realize that this new AMD chip is very impressive at this price point.
Video Fusion versus Intel in gaming: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XH5A4D9qoDQ
And yes, I understand that video is coming out of AMD's camp but follow the multiple links from that video to others and it becomes painfully obvious, that the intel graphics solution has no chance against this new Fusion processor. And as they say in the video, the new upcoming html graphics that will start coming out in the next gen of browsers will need strong graphics support. So even your brand new X201 with i7 costing over a grand will choke if it stumbles across a heavy html laden web page no matter how fast the cpu is clocking at. -
Wow...I feel alot of love in this thread.
...what's NBR without a little entertainment. You shall continue.
-
The thing is, the graphics card is becoming more and more important in computing tasks. More and more programs are taking advantage of utilizing the graphics cards, Flash 10.2 is an example of this.
And yes, I can look at a comparable ASUS Laptop that provides 10+ Hours of battery life but I'd still turn it down. Why? Because glossy plastic, flimsy keyboard, and the graphics cards still won't be as good at the entry level comparable ASUS's.
It all comes down to preferences. You have your preferences, I have mine. But saying something like "LOLL ZOMG WHOEVER BUYS DM1Z DIDNT DO THEIR RESEARCH ROFLMAO" is just being ignorant. -
My point is basically, if you want to create a category for the dm1 and say it beats everyone else in the category, at least don't be facetious about it.
HP Pavilion dm1 Reviewed Review - Display, Audio, Performance, & Graphics
Looks like Toms' review unit wasn't a production unit, because reviewing real laptops, Ion2 beats Fusion in gaming. -
Just throwing this out there....I'd think WoW is CPU dependant in which the ION2 platform does better because of higher clock speeds and more "threads" due to dual core + hyperthreading. Not necessarily better graphics performance.
-
I think the point that Intel fans are missing here, and missing big is AMD's achievement to deliver great performance at budget prices and still break the 6 hour barrier which is very very important in small budget ultraportables. Have we forgot that? These machines are meant for traveling and battery life is key. Its for this reason i stand for AMD's achievements on the fusion.
The way I see it, to get the 1215N up to my specs I would have to buy more ram, a BT module, and a larger HD. At which point I would be paying close to 600 dollars before taxes and in return, receive 25 percent less battery life, and crappy speakers. -
-
shame you cannot get a backlit keyboard or USB3 on the HP, it's a pretty machine.
the sony has backlight, and the MSI has the USB3, but none has everything, such is life. -
-
agreed, it seems like an awesome 'netbook'.
we'll just have to see what the Sony equivalent is like, because i do fancy a backlit keyboard. -
I'll say one thing, the last generation dm1z badly needed a back lit keyboard. It was horrible to read. Pretty on the eyes though. But not functional at all.
Looks like that Sony 11.6 will also have a i3 option. Unfortunately, the specs sheets I have been seeing on the net package windows seven 32 bit with the AMD. Sony puts the 64 bit on the i3 version. Plus, it appears the amd version will only get 2 gigs standard ram. Once the Sony hits the site, you'll be able to add up to 4 gigs. But I'm thinking there won't be a option to upgrade it to 64 bit. Hopefully I am wrong. You really want the 64 bit version of windows. As usual, Sony looks to charge more for its brand name. Not worth it IMO unless your looking at their spiffy Z series that are definitely high end materials.
Here is some early specs on the sony i3 and amd fusion offerings that should hit their store mid feb.. http://www.marketwire.com/press-rel...With-Thin-Light-New-VAIO-Y-Series-1376382.htm -

Is it just me or does it seem like there isn't any easy access panel on the back. Upgrading anything on this is gonna be a pain.

Add a SSD and its that much better. -
Ordered and coming the 25th can't wait got a OCZ vertex SSD.
Couldn't help myself, needed to get a cheap secondary laptop and this fits the bill for exactly what I'm going to use it for.
Cant wait. -
wow this is a really nice laptop 450 after tax with 25 off coupon, For this price there is no comparisons. It can play many games at its native rez with low detail settings. Gets incredible battery life. And costs under 500 dollars. Thats unbeatable at this price.
IKAS be sure to post how easy or hard it is doing user upgrades on this notebook -
I pray that the prices on these notebooks stay very low. My reason is that if you start approaching $500+, then you might as well get a high battery life 13.3 with discrete graphics that you can turn off or on. I'm going to wait for Asus and perhaps Dell to release their Zacate-based notebooks.
$450 is my limit -
Any idea if there will be any Zacate Probooks from HP? I'd like to get a business style, low power laptop with 11-12" screen size.

how many times ill have to say it? ION2 is faster than HD6310... YES, but ION2 w/ATOM is wired to a pci-e x1 1.0 bus!!!!!!! and if it were not enoght an Intel pci-e bus!!!!! intel pci-e bandwidth is crap, so it will be more likely 180-200mb/s, no 250mb/s.
That means it is bottenecked by the pci-e bus, that means it cant perform at 100%! it will depend on the game, some games are more dependant on pci-e bandwidth than others, call of duty series greatly depends on pci-e bandwidth.
3Dmark06 scores are not affected because the whole test is cached in video ram when loading.
In real world tests, HD6310 is FASTER for gaming.
About the crappy WOW performance... man im 100% sure WOW switch the game to DX11 when using recomended settings! Catalysm supports DX11 and HD6310 too, ION2 does not. the 70 fps test on tomshardware was on LK, witch was DX9 only -.- even the benchmark that wa done here i suspect it was done on DX11... they only set the recomended settings too... that means, DX11 HD6310 vs DX9 ION2 = no good. -

Actually, tests show enabling DX11with DX11 compatible hardware with WoW IMPROVES framerates.

To enable DX11, you need a specific CLI parameter or alter the config file to enable it.
